Before the hall, our team spent time on the church itself. St Henry & St Elizabeth in Sheerness is a Grade II listed building from the 1860s, so the repairs were done the traditional way: lime mortar, reclaimed bricks, and stainless steel bars set into the joints to stitch the cracks (you can see them in the photo). The church stayed open for Mass the whole time.

Before and after at St Henry & St Elizabeth's church hall, Sheerness.

We took the hall back to the joists and brought it back to life with new flooring, timber wall panelling, a fitted kitchenette and an accessible shower room. The original fireplace is now the centrepiece of a display celebrating the hall's history, which dates back to 1869.

It's been a privilege to give a space at the heart of the community a new lease of life.

From a disused air raid shelter to an outdoor classroom.

At Canterbury Road Primary School in Sittingbourne, we transformed a neglected corner of the grounds into a space the children can learn and play in, working for Kent County Council with Consult Construct as contract administrator.

We demolished the old shelter, including its concrete floor slab, cleared the overgrowth under ecological supervision and regraded the ground. In its place there is now:

- A fenced forest school area with a play-grade bark surface
- Hoggin paths with timber edging
- New steps in conservation paving with anti-slip nosings
- Turf, planting, timber benches, a storyteller's chair and bug hotels
- Steel palisade boundary fencing to match the existing

All of this was done on a live primary school site. Deliveries were timed around drop-off, lunchtime and pick-up, and every operative and subcontractor was DBS checked.

Thank you to the school and Kent County Council. We hope the pupils enjoy their new outdoor classroom.

A showcase of the heritage repairs and community hall refurbishment at St Henry & St Elizabeth's, Sheerness, now complete and blessed.

It was a privilege to join the parish for the opening and see the hall back in use by local families. Projects like this are why we enjoy working in our own community.

Back in September we promised the full reveal of the church hall at St Henry & St Elizabeth, Sheerness, so here it is.

A hall that had become unusable now has a new floor, an accessible toilet, a community kitchen, and heating and lighting that are cheaper to run.

Every trade on the job was a local firm from Sheppey or Swale. Thank you to the parish for having us.

We didn't win the quiz, but we're counting this one as a victory: £992 raised for Santerpaws Bulgarian Rescue.

Astral was proud to sponsor the Santerpaws charity quiz night at Sheerness East Working Men's Club on Friday 9 October, alongside Anchorage Building Services. Thirteen teams packed out the room, and Team Astral finished a respectable 5th. We're already brushing up for the rematch.

The total includes £892 from entry fees and the raffle, plus a generous £100 donation from our friends at Staxson Ltd towards the charity's Land Fund.

Congratulations to the winners, Ronnies Raw, and well done to the Santerpaws Swale team, led by our Office Manager Karen Sharkie, for a brilliant night.

Santerpaws rescues and rehomes street dogs from Bulgaria's Pleven region, and is one of Astral's partner charities.

Great work last Saturday at Blatchers Close, Minster, where volunteers from the Sheppey Light Railway Greenway cleared the next stretch of the old railway line: brambles, trees, a small digger and a lot of dumped rubbish.

Our MD Paul is the charity's Greenway Project Manager. The line closed 75 years ago, and the aim is a walking and cycling route from Queenborough to Leysdown. Want to lend a hand?

Quiz night tonight! Team Astral will be at Sheerness East Working Men's Club from 7pm for the Santerpaws Bulgarian Rescue charity quiz, with every penny going towards buying land for the shelter. We can't promise brains, but we will try our very best not to take home the wooden spoon. See you there.

🏆 We're a finalist at the London Construction Awards 2026!

We're proud to share that Astral has been shortlisted for Excellence in Social Value: Projects for our work at St Henry & St Elizabeth R.C. Church, Sheerness.

The project brought together careful heritage repairs to the church and a full refurbishment of the church hall, a space at the heart of the local community. Being recognised for social value means a great deal to us. Every building we work on matters to the people who use it, and this one matters to our own community on the Isle of Sheppey.

The organisers have told us it's been a record year for entries, so making the final is a genuine achievement for the whole team. A big thank you to everyone at the parish, our site team and the subcontractors who made it happen.

The winners will be announced on 25th November at ExCeL London. Fingers crossed! 🤞
