We were delighted to see the fascinating results of a study on Corn Buntings at Westmill, which was published this week: https://britishbirds.co.uk/journal/article/observations-use-solar-park-corn-buntings-southern-england
In their study, Ben Secker and his colleagues show that these delicate, endangered species can thrive alongside a solar park which is carefully managed, with little intervention, and in accordance with nature. The park provides nesting materials for these beautiful birds, and offers them a safe place to feed and fledge their young.
Located on an organic farm, Westmill is a haven for wildlife, with other studies undertaken at the site showing that a wide variety of wildflowers and insects also flourish there. Sheep graze under the turbines and around the solar farm, using the panels as shelter from the elements, keeping the grass short and spreading seeds around the site.
It truly is an inspiring example of renewable energy working with nature, and shows that we can generate energy and support wildlife at the same time.
