Donโ€™t miss this recently published article on animal genetic resources (AnGR)! ๐Ÿ‚ ๐Ÿ„ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ– ๐Ÿ“

The Nordic countries house a broad range of farm and companion animal breeds and subspecies that play a critical role in environmental sustainability, food safety and security, and human activities. Unfortunately, close to 80% of these breeds and subspecies are either endangered or critically endangered, with population sizes too small to ensure their long-term survival. In addition, almost half of them have either a declining orunknown demographic trend, and many of them suffer from high inbreeding.

Due to the increasing demand for additional measures for safeguarding AnGR, this document discusses the status of active AnGR conservation measures in the Nordic countries and emphasize the central role of regional cooperation in ensuring AnGR sustainability and long-term viability. Further, the contributions of cryoconservation in mitigating genetic losses are discussed.

Lydia, one of our lab technicians, joined the BSAS expert speakers and delegates for the 'Gene editing farm animals: the facts' conference in Manchester last week. It was an informative day with new legislation, welfare considerations and technological developments covered from multiple agricultural sectors ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿท๐Ÿงฌ thank you BSAS - British Society of Animal Science for a great event and The Roslin Institute's support!

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Manchester today for the 'gene editing farm animals' conference.

Discussing, exploring, challenging and collaborating takes us further than siloed approaches and we are very grateful to our speakers and delegates for bringing their knowledge and energy to this important topic ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

How does our biobank model help? Our model enables us to:

1. Indefinitely preserve livestock genetics โ€“ so valuable livestock DNA can be stored beyond the lifespan of the original animal and stored for as long as needed, for future use.

2. Regeneratively store livestock DNA โ€“ we aim for all preserved samples to be capable of creating new life, to ensure breed & food security, at both the individual herd and national level.

The UK National Livestock Biobank is the solution to the UK's declining and endangered livestock populations.

Using proven genetic preservation protocols and systematically recording animal data, we make up a regenerative animal gene bank. UK breed and food production security are our top priority.

The UK National Livestock Biobank is a farm animal gene bank, established to ensure UK livestock breed and herd preservation, diversity, and national food security.

Our project leader, Lucy sums up the need for this resource perfectly: "We firmly believe that we need to act to preserve and safeguard what is available to us today, to ensure a sustainable, resilient and adaptable tomorrow, with the multi model, regenerative cryopreservation model of the UK National Livestock Biobank providing the technology upon which this can be achieved."

Alongside the preservation of skin samples, the UK National Livestock Biobank also provides for gamete sample storage. This includes frozen semen, embryos and eggs. This reproductive sample repository can be used to collate on farm semen collections to a central, cataloged system, enabling the capture of reproductive resources that could prove vital to future farming systems.
