A look back at just a few of the incredible objects from the Science Museum Group Collection arriving at their new home here at the Science and Innovation Park.

This summer, our guided tours continue, offering a chance to go behind the scenes of a working museum store. On a tour of the Hawking Building, you’ll discover where our objects are cared for, conserved, researched and prepared for display across our five national museums, as well as for loans to institutions in the UK and around the world.

After a sold out run of tours, June and July dates are available to book now.

Some storage solutions just make sense!

This statue is of Nipper the dog, who was born in Bristol in 1884. By listening to his owner’s music, Nipper inspired the painting ‘His Master’s Voice’, which would later become an entertainment trademark, most famously used by the international music and entertainment retailer, HMV.

When deciding where to store this model in the Hawking Building, which is home to around 80% of the Science Museum Group Collection, it only felt right to put him next to a gramophone.

If you have followed along with our 12 Days of the Collection series, thank you!

We are excited to step into 2026 and continue with our work to care for the Science Museum Group Collection and to welcome many more people to go behind the scenes of it inside the Hawking Building at the Science and Innovation Park this year.

To round things off, we thought we’d leave you with some of the spectacular photos taken at some of our largest object moves so far.

12 Days of the Collection — Day 11 📘

On the eleventh day of Christmas, we delve into the work of our Library and Archives team at the Park, who have developed specialist equipment to care for some of the more vulnerable objects in our collection.

Bespoke boxes have been made for very special books that need an extra layer of protection to help them buffer against fluctuations in humidity and temperature – which can be really damaging for these objects. Carefully designed boxes also protect against dust and dissociation (where bindings or text blocks have loosened over time).

12 Days of the Collection — Day 10 ⚙️

We’re proud to work with brilliant creative people such as engineering artist James Capper whose studio is on-site at the Science and Innovation Park.

His striking ATLAS PROTOTYPE sculpture, an articulated hydraulic arm standing atop a solid carved concrete block, continues to be at the centre of the Engineers gallery at the Science Museum The free object gallery celebrates engineers and how they shape the world we live in – learn more about it: https://bit.ly/3KX8uIR
