Recognition for a member of the Data Science Laboratory at the SkyImpact Challenge 2026

The Data Science Laboratory is pleased to announce that Dimitris Zopounidis, PhD Candidate at the School of Production Engineering and Management and member of the Laboratory, was part of the interdisciplinary team that received the Award of Excellence (3rd Place) at the SkyImpact Challenge 2026.

The challenge, organised by Heraklion International Airport, Crete and Bizrupt, focused on developing innovative solutions supporting the vision and future development of the New Heraklion International Airport.

This distinction highlights the value of interdisciplinary collaboration and demonstrates how research, data-driven innovation and scientific knowledge can contribute to addressing real-world challenges in aviation and airport development.

Congratulations to all team members on this outstanding achievement.

The initiative is conducted by the PhD candidate of the Data Science Laboratory, Dimitris Zopounidis, combining empirical aviation research with data-driven industry analysis.

The Data Science Laboratory - DS Lab (Technical University of Crete) participated in a discussion on Artificial Intelligence, Business Analytics and Data Science on naftemporiki.gr TV, through its researcher Dimitris Zopounidis.

The discussion focused on the role of AI in supporting data-driven decision-making and shaping modern business strategy. One of the key takeaways is that Artificial Intelligence does not replace human judgment, yet it enhances it.

The Data Science Laboratory - DS Lab of the Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης / Technical University of Crete actively participated in the annual international academic meeting held in Chania, organized in collaboration with the Financial Engineering Laboratory - FELab and the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences of Spain (RACEF).

Within the framework of the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Technical University of Crete and RACEF, establishing a structured basis for future collaboration in research, academic exchange, and joint initiatives in key domains such as Artificial Intelligence, Business Analytics, and Data Science.

The researcher of the Data Science Laboratory - DS Lab, Dimitris Zopounidis, contributed to the scientific program with research presentations addressing the role of Artificial Intelligence in economic systems and regional development, highlighting the importance of data-driven approaches in shaping sustainable and inclusive growth.

The participation of the Laboratory in this high-level international meeting reinforces its commitment to advancing research excellence and fostering impactful collaborations that bridge data, technology, and real-world decision-making.
