OUTLINE OF ACTIVITY: Internet of things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain and 5G Communications, innovative technology are the driving forces for Smart City development. The successful cultivation of these essential technologies will thrive new smart city applications in energy, healthcare, transportation, and infrastructure developments.

Electronics and Communication Section (ECS) of the IET Hong Kong will invite professionals, practitioners, academics, and experts in the Smart City industries among the Greater Bay Area cities, including Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangzhou, to participate or even present on the captioned topics in Electronics and Communications Symposium (ECS2026). This would be an excellent opportunity for IET members to appreciate the latest development in smart city technologies and their potential applications. Furthermore, this would synergise innovations, experts, and technologies to boost the internet economy in the GBA.

The technical visit organized by the Management Section Committee to the WSD H2OPE Centre in Tin Shui Wai was successfully held on 18 July 2026 with an overwhelming response received from 22 participants.

In the beginning of the visit, Ir Samuel CHUNG briefed members on the history and importance of water supplies in Hong Kong. Ir CHUNG highlighted that fresh water was a scarce natural resource especially as the average annual rainfall would only enough to take up only 20~30% of fresh water demands in Hong Kong. Luckily, with a strong support from the Mainland China, Hong Kong has a distinctive advantage of enjoying reliable raw water supply from Dongjiang that covering its 70~80% fresh water demand in the past six decades. On the other side, as a responsible stakeholders under the Greater Bay Area, the Hong Kong Government have to establish the Total Water Management (TWM) Strategy to cater for the threat of climate change and drought weather for the generations to come. He also emphasized that the major principles of the TWM strategy are focusing on both containing fresh water demand growth and diversifying water resources.

Then, the guided tours demonstrated the state-of-the-art facility features including 12 exhibition zones containing over 50 exhibits relevant to daily lives, a 3D dome theater, and live water recycling demonstrations. During the visit, the guided tours reminded us that only 2% of the water on Earth is fresh water and thus members are encouraged to learn how to conserve one of the most precious natural resources on the planet. To our surprise, over half of the global population does not have access to fresh water like we do in Hong Kong, and therefore there is a good start for us to consider using faucets and machinery that is water-efficient.

Lastly, Ms. Sally LEUNG, the Chairman of the Management Section presented souvenir to the WSD for the tour.

🚆 ICRE 2026 圓滿閉幕
為期兩天的 第九屆國際鐵路工程會議（ICRE 2026） 已於香港圓滿舉行。來自世界各地的鐵路專家、工程師、學者及業界領袖，就智慧鐵路、可持續發展、數碼化轉型、網絡安全及未來運輸科技等議題深入交流，共同探討如何建設更智能、更可持續及更具韌性的鐵路系統。

大會第二天除了精彩的技術論壇外，參加者亦參觀了 港鐵黃竹坑車廠（Wong Chuk Hang Depot） 及 Integrated Wheel Maintenance Centre (iWMC)，深入了解香港鐵路在維修管理、智能化檢測及資產管理方面的先進實踐。
衷心感謝所有講者、嘉賓、與會者、贊助機構及支持團體的鼎力支持。特別感謝 ICRE 2026 籌委會、義工團隊及秘書處 過去數月的努力與付出，成就了這場國際鐵路工程盛會。

🚆 ICRE 2026 Opens in Hong Kong!

Seminar on DIY Wellness for Engineering Professionals

Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Hong Kong successfully held the 2 hours Seminar on DIY Wellness for Engineering Professionals on 6th July 2026. This seminar gathered over 20 engineering professionals.

Engineering professionals often worked long hours in front of screens, attended back-to-back meetings, and dealt with tight project deadlines. Over time, this kind of routine could lead to common health problems such as neck and shoulder stiffness, lower back pain, fatigue, poor sleep, and reduced concentration. Many people simply relied on basic company medical support or only saw a doctor when they felt unwell, but that approach might not have been enough to maintain long-term physical and mental well-being. To address these challenges, IVE Engineering and IET Hong Kong organized “DIY Wellness for Engineering Professionals,” a 2-hour interactive seminar designed specifically for engineers, IT staff, and technical professionals. The session aimed to provide practical, easy-to-understand health solutions that fit into a busy working lifestyle. Instead of offering only theory, the talk focused on realistic ways to improve daily health and overall performance.

The speaker, Chinese medicine practitioner Mr. Ho Kar Yu, combined knowledge from Chinese and Western medicine, natural therapy, mind-body medicine, regenerative medicine, and traditional wellness practices into one practical framework. Key topics included mitochondrial health, microcirculation, chronic pain management, stress relief, and simple exercise and self-care habits that were easy to apply at home or at work. Participants also learned small but effective movements that could help relieve neck and back tension, improve sleep quality, and reduce the feeling of exhaustion after work.

More importantly, the seminar showed participants how to maintain clear thinking, stable energy, and creative output even in a high-pressure environment. It also helped each participant build a personal “engineering wellness DIY” plan that suited their own needs and lifestyle. The seminar provided a valuable opportunity for professionals to refresh both body and mind and take a step toward better health.

Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all participants, as well as to Chinese medicine practitioner Mr. Ho Kar Yu for their generous support and arrangements, which enabled a smooth and successful event.

Calling all young problem solvers and future engineers – due to overwhelming response, we’re launching the Second Round of the IET Hong Kong Faraday Challenge Days 2026!
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Hong Kong will host an additional one day STEM challenge where secondary school students work in teams to tackle a real world engineering task on the theme of environmental protection and conservation (the exact task will only be revealed on the day!).

IET Hong Kong Pays Courtesy Visit to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the HKSAR

Led by Ir Albert Leung, members of the External Affairs Task Force of the IET Hong Kong Branch Committee paid a courtesy visit to the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the HKSAR Government. The delegation was warmly received by Mr Raymond P**n, JP, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, together with his senior leadership team, including Mr Arthur Lee, JP, Deputy Director (Regulatory Services), Mr Vincent Chow, JP, Deputy Director (Trading Services), Mr Yiu-hon Chan, JP, Assistant Director (Railways), and Mr Ping-wai Lam, Chief Engineer (Energy Efficiency).

The visit provided a valuable platform for professional exchange on topics of mutual interest, including engineering and technology development, smart city initiatives, energy efficiency and conservation, regulatory excellence, railway and electrical safety, and the future of innovation and technology in Hong Kong. Prof K.F. Tsang, Chairman of IET Hong Kong, highlighted the importance of closer collaboration between government and the engineering profession in supporting Hong Kong’s sustainable development and competitiveness. During the meeting, EMSD introduced its latest initiatives and strategic priorities, while Ir Albert Leung presented the vision, mission, and 2026 strategic focus of IET Hong Kong, including engineering excellence, youth development, industry engagement, and the promotion of innovation and technology. Members of the delegation, including Ir Ho-wing Chan, Ir John Chow, and Mr Tommy Kwan, also shared the activities of IET Hong Kong’s various technical sections, demonstrating the breadth and diversity of the Institution’s professional community. Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to fostering engineering talent, advancing emerging technologies, strengthening professional standards, and supporting Hong Kong’s transformation into a smart and sustainable city.

The meeting concluded with a mutual desire to deepen cooperation and maintain ongoing dialogue, further strengthening the longstanding partnership between IET Hong Kong and EMSD in serving the engineering profession and the wider community.
