Why the compressor blading have coating?

Compressor blades in a gas turbine rotor are coated to improve their durability, efficiency and reliability.
The coating is not primarily for high-temperature protection (as in turbine blades), but to protect the compressor from wear and environmental damage.

The main reasons are:
1. Corrosion protection – Compressor blades are exposed to moisture, salt (especially offshore or coastal plants), industrial pollutants, and chemicals. Coatings help prevent corrosion and pitting.

2. Erosion resistance – Dust, sand, and other airborne particles can erode the leading edges of compressor blades. Hard coatings reduce material loss and maintain the blade's aerodynamic profile.

3. Wear and fretting protection – Blade roots and dovetail connections experience micro-movements during operation.

4. Coatings reduce fretting wear and prevent surface damage.
Improved compressor efficiency – By maintaining a smooth surface finish and blade geometry, coatings help preserve aerodynamic performance, reducing compressor efficiency losses over time.

Without proper CRI, deploying a spare rotor carries substantial technical and operational risks.
