SciFest 🔬🔭 Calling all future scientists, engineers, and innovators! 🚀💫Step into a world of endless possibilities at a SciFest STEM Fair! 🌟🧪 Higgins as its sole Patron.

SciFest is Ireland’s largest STEM fair programme for second-level students. SciFest’s mission is to ensure every second-level student has an opportunity to develop critical STEM skillsets through participation in a STEM fair, irrespective of their ability, background, gender or circumstance. SciFest operates across the whole island of Ireland and throughout the entire school year and, being locall

y and regionally based and free to enter, it is highly inclusive and accessible. The SciFest programme was founded by the current CEO, Sheila Porter. The first SciFest STEM fair took place in the Institute of Technology, Tallaght in 2006. The programme was launched nationwide in 2008, with some 1600 students taking part in nine fairs in regional venues. In 2025 over 16,000 students took part in over one 165 SciFest fairs, local, regional and national. The SciFest programme consists of one-day STEM fairs hosted at local level in schools (SciFest@School), at regional level (SciFest@College) in TU Dublin (3 venues), ATU (3 venues), TUS (3 venues) DkIT, DCU, MTU (2 venues), SETU (2 venues) and St Mary's College, Derry, culminating in a national competition for the overall winners of each regional event. Winning students from the National Final represent Ireland at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in America, The Eskom EXPO International Science Fair in South Africa and the Berlin Long Night of Science. SciFest is funded entirely by sponsorship. The main sponsors are Intel Ireland, Boston Scientific, EirGrid, Mallinckrodt, Research Ireland and the Department of Education. SciFest is also supported by a number of other companies and organisations. The ongoing expansion and development of the SciFest programme continues to create opportunities for additional sponsors. SciFest is honoured to have the President of Ireland, Michael D. In 2016 SciFest joined Gaisce as an official Challenge Partner supporting The President's Award. The SciFest programme is run by a not-for-profit company, SciFest PLC:

🌍 World Environment Day 2026 🌍

Today, 5 June, we join people around the world in celebrating World Environment Day and recognising the importance of protecting our planet for future generations.

At SciFest, we are continually inspired by the passion, creativity and commitment that young people show in tackling environmental challenges through STEM. Their projects demonstrate not only an understanding of the issues facing our world but also a determination to develop innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.

This commitment is reflected in the popularity of the EirGrid Cleaner Climate Award, which recognises projects that address climate change, sustainability and environmental protection. During the 2025/2026 academic year, a remarkable 239 students across 103 local SciFest@School fairs received the EirGrid Cleaner Climate Award, with a further 16 awards being presented at regional SciFest fairs.

From renewable energy and biodiversity to waste reduction and sustainable living, students are showing that they care deeply about the environment and are eager to make a positive difference. On World Environment Day, we congratulate all of our participants whose projects are helping to create a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future for everyone.

Giant Planets, Habitable Worlds

KatieMae O'Neill from the St. Mary's Secondary School Mallow, was awarded the SciFest Runner-up Best Project Award at the 2026 SciFest@College hosted by Munster Technological University Cork for her outstanding project, “The Metallicity-Driven Dynamics of Hot Jupiter Formation and Migration: Consequences for Neighbouring Planetary Habitability.”

KatieMae's research investigated how the metallicity of a star—the abundance of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium—influences the formation and inward migration of Hot Jupiter planets. These massive gas giants challenge traditional theories of planet formation because, unlike Jupiter in our own Solar System, they orbit extremely close to their host stars. She also examined how the migration of these planets can affect the potential habitability of neighbouring worlds within the same planetary system.

To carry out her investigation, KatieMae employed a range of data-driven analytical techniques. Using real exoplanet data from the NASA Exoplanet Archive, she conducted her analysis in Python using Google Colab. She applied statistical methods, machine learning models, including random forest algorithms, and data visualisation tools to identify correlations between stellar metallicity and planetary characteristics such as mass, orbital period and orbital eccentricity. These analyses enabled her to infer likely migration mechanisms and assess their implications for the habitability of neighbouring planets. To strengthen and refine her findings, she also integrated spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

KatieMae's project demonstrated an impressive combination of astrophysics, data science and machine learning, highlighting the increasingly important role of computational techniques in advancing our understanding of planetary formation and the possibility of life beyond Earth.

A total of 239 students across 103 local SciFest@School fairs received the EirGrid Cleaner Climate Award during the 2025/2026 academic year, a remarkable 40% increase on last year. The award recognises projects that explore innovative ways to harness clean energy, while also considering how that energy can be transported efficiently and the wider climate impacts of the innovation.

It is inspiring to see so many young people engaging with some of the most pressing energy and climate challenges facing society today. Their creativity, curiosity and problem-solving skills offer real hope for a more sustainable future. 🌍⚡

Celebrating Ability, Achievement and Inclusion: 10 Years of SciFest@TCPID 🌟

2026 marks ten years since TCPID (Trinity Centre for People with Intellectual Disabillities), Abbott and SciFest came together to collaborate on what has become one of the highlight fairs of the SciFest calendar, SciFest@TCPID. To mark this special milestone Sheila Porter, SciFest, presented Marie Devitt, TCPID, with a Dublin Crystal plaque at yesterday's STEM fair.

All in all, it was a truly wonderful day. Congratulations to Marie and to the TCPID team. Congratulations also to all the Abbott mentors, and in particular to Rachelle Waters, Abbott, who organises the programme in Abbott. And of course congratulations to the students.
