🚧 Lucan Village Project Update 🚧

We’re delighted to share some fantastic progress from our Lucan Village project over the past few weeks. A number of key features are now taking shape, bringing us closer to delivering a vibrant new public space for the community.

✨ Along the Demesne, the installation of our new architectural feature structure is now complete. This striking addition is already creating a strong visual identity for the area and will serve as a focal point for visitors.

🪨 Pebble seating has been installed along the Promenade, providing inviting rest areas that encourage people to pause, interact, and enjoy their surroundings.

🎭 At the Village Green, both amphitheatres are progressing well. With all below-ground infrastructure now in place, we’ve entered an exciting phase where their layout and character are really beginning to emerge. These spaces will soon offer versatile outdoor venues for events, performances, and community gatherings.

We’re proud of the momentum on site and thrilled to contribute to a project that will bring lasting benefits to the Lucan community. Stay tuned for more updates as the works continue! 🌿👷✨

🌿 A new chapter for Portlaoise’s former convent gardens 🌿

So proud to see the transformation of the community garden beside the historic Nuns’ Run — where heritage, sustainability, and community well-being come together beautifully. 💚

What was once a quiet walled space is now a vibrant green haven filled with planting beds, young trees, and play areas for all ages. It’s more than just landscaping — it’s about reviving local biodiversity, creating a natural carbon sink, and giving people a place to connect with nature and each other. 🌱

Every element, from the permeable paths to the native planting and restored stonework, was designed with climate resilience and environmental care in mind.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing this beautiful space to life — a perfect example of how we can honour history while building a sustainable future. 🌍✨

At Bretland Construction, sustainability isn’t a buzzword - it’s built into everything we do. From energy-efficient design to waste reduction, we’re proud to be building a greener future. 🌱🏗️

On our Portlaoise Convent site, solar panels have been installed to harness renewable energy and reduce the building’s carbon footprint. As the convent is a historical structure, the project is being carried out with great care and respect for its heritage. Wherever possible, original materials are being carefully reused, upgraded, and refitted from a conservation perspective, preserving the character of the building while embracing modern sustainability practices.

🦺 CIF Safety Week 2025 – Back to Basics Across Our Sites!

This week, our teams have been pausing, reflecting, and putting safety first across all projects as part of CIF Safety Week 2025.

Here’s a snapshot of the action:

👷 Lucan Project – Toolbox talk on Plant & Machinery Safety, covering safe operating zones, pre-use checks, and clear communication between operators and ground teams.

🏗️ Gallery Quay – Focused on Working at Heights, edge protection, harness checks, and Safe Plans of Action (SPAs) to keep high-risk tasks safe.

🧱 Giraffe Lansdowne – Continued focus on Working at Heights, plus Access & Egress, ensuring safe routes, housekeeping, and scaffolding.

🚧 Portlaoise – Live demo on plant, machinery & pedestrian safety, showing visibility zones, proximity alerts, and safe movement around live equipment.

Safety leadership starts on the ground, with teamwork, open discussion, and commitment to doing the basics right — every day.

An Evening at the Races 🏇

We were thrilled to sponsor The Bretland Construction Handicap Steeplechase at Kilbeggan Races last Friday, July 25th, and what a night it was!

Not only did our “Best Turned Out” horse, DYON MAGIC, take 1st place (clearly our directors know a winner when they see one 😉), but our team also enjoyed a fantastic evening of food, drinks, and top-class entertainment.

It was a great opportunity to celebrate our hardworking employees with a well-earned night out, while also supporting local businesses and community events.

Project Update 🏗️

Our Lucan Civils project is progressing well, with the main park entrance nearing completion and paving works currently underway. At Lucan Promenade, kerbing has been successfully completed, and preparations have begun for the soft landscaping phase.

Meanwhile, the below-ground infrastructure for two amphitheatres is now in place, and work is ramping up to begin paving across the Village Green.

Exciting progress continues on site as we help shape a vibrant new space for the Lucan community. Stay tuned for more updates!

📍 On-site in Portlaoise on Thursday

We carried out an interactive toolbox talk with all contractors, encouraging active participation around the completion of Safe Plans of Action (SPAs).

As part of the engagement, everyone was invited to complete an SPA, and two standout entries were selected. The site supervisors behind them were each recognised with a €25 One4All voucher as a token of appreciation for their contribution to site safety.

Great to see strong engagement and a shared commitment to keeping safety front and centre. 👷‍♂️👷‍♀️

The Bretland team are taking on the "600,000 steps for Su***de Prevention". Encouraging our staff to get out and move as a 10 minute walk has great benefits for your mental and physical health! The competition between the team has been competitive and we have already reached over 2 million steps!

Pieta House has done great work with those struggling with mental health issues and those affected by su***de. We have created this fundraiser for Pieta House to help raise funds to keep this service going.

Bretland will also match the donations made on our fundraiser page to our Charity Partner The Lighthouse Charity
