In Memoriam: Professor Ada Yonath
The Institute of Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem mourns the passing of Professor Ada Yonath, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and one of Israel’s most distinguished scientists.
Professor Yonath was a pioneering structural biologist whose groundbreaking work on the structure and function of the ribosome transformed our understanding of one of the fundamental processes of life. Her determination to pursue a scientific challenge that many considered impossible ultimately led to discoveries of profound importance for molecular biology, chemistry, and medicine, and earned her the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Her scientific journey was closely connected to the Hebrew University. Professor Yonath was an alumna of the University, where she completed her undergraduate and master’s studies. Her achievements stand as a source of great pride to our academic community and as an enduring inspiration to generations of students and researchers.
Beyond the significance of her scientific accomplishments, Professor Yonath will be remembered for her intellectual courage, curiosity, persistence, and unwavering commitment to scientific discovery.
