Hnam Chhantu Pawl is an NGO, which was formed 24 years ago, with an objective to bring about economic self sufficiency for rural and urban people of Mizoram. It gives more focus on handicrafts and handloom industries.

•Working in the field of handicraft and handloom, Hnam Chhantu Pawl gives more importance in preventing traditional crafts which are nearly extinct. So, much training in the field of traditional crafts was given to unemployed youth and housewives. And the organization did the searching for skilled artisans within Mizoram so that they can inherit their skills to the young Mizo.

•The organization was set up in 3rd March, 1994 at the residence of Pu R.Ramhmangaiha, ElectricVeng, Aizawl by six individuals who vowed to work for the upliftment of the Mizoram state. It was registered under the Societies Registration Act,1860 in the year 1995.

Are you familiar with ‘cane chair’ or ‘cane furniture’? The answer must be “Yes.” However, have you heard anyone say ‘bamboo chair’ or ‘bamboo furniture’? Probably not or much less.

Cane and bamboo are completely different! Cane comes from ‘skein’, which is the shiny outer skin of the plant, a relative of palm tree, which is indigenous in South East Asian countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, which was then imported into India. The use of cane furniture in India can be traced back to 2nd century.

The intrinsic quality of cane and bamboo makes them ideal for making furniture. They both are yet , yet , and yet . Because of the abundance and quick maturity of bamboos, they are becoming more popular for making household furniture and decoration.

The only drawback is its sensitivity to water. Anyhow, who would want to leave bamboo furniture in an open space?! Hence, ‘bamboo chair’ is now known by general people as ‘cane chair’, but we now know the hidden cause.

Here is the process of making bamboo/cane furniture:
1) Heating
2) Hand molded into various shapes making component parts 3) Attaching components using glue/screws to create frame
4) Wrapping joints with binding
5) Dying
6) Applying a coat of lacquer

Scientifically speaking, is not a but . However, until 2017, the Indian Forest Act, 1927 considered it as a tree.

🎍Before the amendment of the Indian Forest Act, 1927, farmers in the bamboo-growing states, particularly the North East, had to face harassment quite often because they could neither cut it nor transport it.

🎍There was a long-pending demand to amend the obsolete law. Finally, in 2017, Lok Sabha amended the law and labelled bamboo as grass.

🎍Now there is no prohibition on growing or cutting bamboo trees even outside the forests.

The were built using bamboo and wood as predominant raw materials, with M. baccifera making the largest contribution.

Because of its easy availability, workability and low cost, bamboo is employed for columns, purlins, rafters, trusses, as well as walling and roofing (Satter 1995).
