In a path-breaking initiative, Singareni Collieries Company Limited is setting up India’s first methanol production plant. The plant leverages carbon capture technology to produce 180 kg of methanol daily from 500 kg of captured carbon dioxide, emitted by thermal power plants.

The NTPC Kayamkulam, along with BHEL, is all set to launch a pilot project for electricity generation using methanol, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in India. If successful, methanol usage could reduce dependency on gas imports, lower power generation costs, support a circular carbon economy, and lower emissions.

Carbon credits are measurable, verifiable emission reductions from certified climate action projects. Each credit represents one less tonne of carbon dioxide, or another greenhouse gas equivalent, (CO2e) in the atmosphere. These credits can be monetised by selling them in carbon markets, allowing buyer companies or parties to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide.

In the clean cooking sector, carbon credits are issued, based on the volume of emissions that are avoided when clean cookstoves are used instead of more polluting alternatives. Clean cooking projects accounted for around 15% of all carbon credits issued from May to November 2023.

Over its lifetime, a single cookstove can generate between 10 and 28 carbon credits, depending on its usage. With carbon credit prices ranging from $7-10 per credit, the financial returns from each stove can vary between $70 and $280.

The Government of India aims to promote methanol as a green fuel. India currently produces 0.8 million tonnes of methanol annually against a demand of 4 million tonnes. Niti Aayog expects this demand to rise to 10-15 million tonnes by 2030, necessitating a strong push to boost domestic production.

As part of the coal gasification mission, it is expected that at least a couple of coal-to-methanol manufacturing plants will be set up in the next 5-7 years. Niti Aayog is also collaborating with public and private industry to set up bamboo-to-methanol plants to produce green methanol.

Methanol is categorised into fossil-fuel-based and renewable depending upon the production method and the associated emission levels.

Fossil-fuel-based methanol consists of grey methanol, produced from natural gas, and black methanol, produced from coal. Renewable methanol includes blue and green methanol.

Blue methanol, produced using blue hydrogen in combination with carbon capture technology, has comparatively lower emissions than brown and grey methanol but is not carbon neutral. Green methanol, produced from biomass or green hydrogen, is considered the most environmentally sustainable.
