Saffron: 3D printer filament. White: cotton thread. Green: jumper wire. The chakra: a 24-tooth gear.

We spent an hour on the workbench yesterday making this, and the coincidence that started it is a good one - the Ashoka Chakra has 24 spokes, and a 24-tooth gear was sitting in the spares tray.

A wheel that turns because something else turns with it. Twenty-four teeth, no single one doing the work.

That's a reasonable thing to think about on a day like today, and it's also a reasonable description of what a functioning school lab looks like. The teacher who agreed to learn something new at 47. The principal who gave up a period from a subject that had a board exam attached. The trustee who approved a line item with no measurable return for eighteen months. The student who broke a ₹400 sensor and told someone instead of hiding it.

None of those individually build anything. Together they produce a room where children make things.

Seventy-nine years of a country built the same way — by an enormous number of people doing unglamorous work that didn't get their names attached to it.

Tomorrow every school in the country will hoist a flag. Today, 40 students in Class 7 are building one that lights up.

Twenty minutes, ₹18 per student, no microcontroller:
→ Copper tape laid in a single loop on card stock
→ Three LEDs - saffron, white, green - bridged across a gap in the loop
→ One CR2032 cell, folded corner as the switch
→ Press to light

The teaching happens in the failures. Half the class will mount an LED backwards and get nothing, which is how they learn that current has a direction. A few will short the loop and drain the cell in seconds. One will figure out how to add a fourth LED without being told, and that student should be asked to explain it to the room rather than the teacher.

The reason we like this one for August: self-reliance is an abstract idea until a twelve-year-old fixes their own circuit without asking an adult. That's a small thing, and it is exactly the thing.

Run it during the assembly-day prep period. Materials are available in any electronics market, and copper tape keeps for years.

One request - brief students on the Flag Code before they build. Paper flags are not to be discarded on the ground after the day ends, and a badge designed to be kept solves that problem neatly.

21 Days. 180 Makers. From Ideas to Prototypes.

We’re proud to have completed a 21-day AIoT Summer Training Program at Baba Farid Group of Institutions, Bathinda, engaging 180 young makers in a completely hands-on learning journey.

From basics to advanced concepts, idea generation to prototype development, makers learned by doing — working with AI, IoT, electronics, programming, sensors and real-world problem-solving.

The biggest takeaway?
They didn’t just learn technology. They experienced what it truly means to build.

Experiment. Fail. Debug. Improve. Build again.

That’s the kind of learning we believe creates future-ready innovators.

A robotics kit locked in a cupboard is the most expensive furniture a school can own. We say this with some sympathy, because it happens to good schools with good intentions.
The purchase order gets approved, the boxes arrive, there's a photo for the website - and then the kits go into storage until the next inspection.

The reason is almost never the equipment.

In our experience, the blocker is one of four things, and schools usually know exactly which one it is; they just don't say it out loud in meetings.

We've walked into rooms with ₹15 lakh of equipment where 30-40 students physically cannot work at the same time. The kit was right. The layout was wrong.

The test: stand at the door and ask whether 30 students could enter, build, test and clean up in 40 minutes without queueing. If the answer is no, the layout is the constraint - not the kit.

Most school labs don't fail on budget. They fail on the floor plan.

We've walked into rooms with ₹15 lakh of equipment where 30 students physically cannot work at the same time. The kit was right. The layout was wrong.

Here's the three-zone split that fixes it:

BUILD ZONE — 60% of floor area. Heavy tables, near the power wall and natural light. No fixed rows facing a board. Islands of 5–6 students, walkable on all sides.

THINK ZONE — 25%. Whiteboard, low seating, near the door. This is where a period starts and ends. If students walk straight to the tools, they skip the thinking.

STORE ZONE — 15%. Open shelving, eye level, transparent bins, labelled on the front face. Anything in a locked cupboard is functionally not in your lab.

Two non-negotiables: → 1.2 metres of circulation space between islands. A teacher must reach any student within 5 seconds. → Never bolt tables to the wall in rows. The room stops being reconfigurable and every future activity has to bend around your furniture.

Celebrating World Youth Skills Day at EMRS Bangiriposi, Mayurbhanj

Karkhana Makerspace proudly celebrated World Youth Skills Day at EMRS Bangiriposi, Mayurbhanj, Odisha, by empowering over 400 young makers with essential 21st-century skills.

The celebration focused on nurturing creativity, innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and hands-on STEM learning through engaging activities and interactive sessions. Students explored emerging technologies while developing practical skills that prepare them for the future of education, innovation, and employment.

At Karkhana Makerspace, we believe that equipping young minds with future-ready skills is the foundation for building confident innovators and changemakers. We are grateful to the school administration, teachers, and enthusiastic students for making this celebration a great success.
