A clip-on meter, also known as a clamp meter, is an electrical test tool with a hinged jaw that allows it to clamp around a live conductor and measure the current flowing through it without making physical contact. It functions by detecting the magnetic field generated by the electric current.

How a clip-on meter works
The operating principle depends on the type of meter:
For alternating current (AC): A standard AC clamp meter uses a current transformer in its jaws. When the jaws are clamped around a wire carrying AC, the magnetic field from the current induces a proportional current in the transformer's coil, which is then measured and displayed.
For direct current (DC): To measure DC, a Hall effect clamp meter is used. It features a Hall effect sensor in the jaw gap that detects the static magnetic field created by the DC current and converts it into a voltage signal. Hall effect meters can also measure AC.
Common uses and applications
Clip-on meters are a popular tool for electricians and technicians due to their safety and convenience. They are used for:
High-current measurement: They are ideal for measuring high current levels, which can be dangerous or impossible to measure with a standard multimeter.
