Greetings from MA@IITK.
Every year MA@IITK conducts "Understanding lecture" where basic concepts
of science and engineering are explained to IITK students. This year we
are honoured to have with us Prof. Rajesh Prasad (Dept. Of Applied
Mechanics, IIT Delhi) as the speaker for this talk. The details of the
talk are as follows:
Title: "15 vs. 21 vs. 45: A journey into the world of anisotropic elastic
properties"
ABSTRACT:
Are crystals isotropic or anisotropic? Does the answer depend upon the
crystal system? In particular, are cubic crystals isotropic? And does the
answer also depend upon the type of property? Can the same material be
isotropic for one property but anisotropic for another? Is negative
Poisson’s ratio possible? If possible, is it rare or common? Why was
Robert Hooke interested in the elasticity of springs? And how did he
announce his law to the world? How do we extend his law to accommodate
anisotropy? What was the disagreement between George Green and A.L. Cauchy
on the elastic
behaviour of crystals? Welcome to this journey in the strange world of
anisotropic elastic properties.
