Greetings from MA@IITK.
Every year MA@IITK conducts "Understanding lecture" where basic concepts
of science and engineering are explained to IITK students. This year we
are honoured to have with us Prof. Rajesh Prasad (Dept. Of Applied
Mechanics, IIT Delhi) as the speaker for this talk. The details of the
talk are as follows:
Title: "15 vs. 21 vs. 45: A journey into the world of anisotropic elastic
properties"

ABSTRACT:
Are crystals isotropic or anisotropic? Does the answer depend upon the
crystal system? In particular, are cubic crystals isotropic? And does the
answer also depend upon the type of property? Can the same material be
isotropic for one property but anisotropic for another? Is negative
Poisson’s ratio possible? If possible, is it rare or common? Why was
Robert Hooke interested in the elasticity of springs? And how did he
announce his law to the world? How do we extend his law to accommodate
anisotropy? What was the disagreement between George Green and A.L. Cauchy
on the elastic
behaviour of crystals? Welcome to this journey in the strange world of
anisotropic elastic properties.

Greetings from MA@IITK.
Material Advantage IIT Kanpur chapter in association with ASM International, India Chapter is organizing a competition across various MA Chapters and students pursuing Material science in other educational institutions including IITK.
Participants are invited to record two-minute-long lightning-style talks that can cover some aspect of the materials tetrahedron (represented in the form of a wheel in the flyer) as a part of your research, a project you’ve worked on, or simply as a topic that you find exciting. Please note the theme of the video should adhere to the materials' wheel. The competition is conducted in two categories: 1. Basic- Undergraduate Students 2. Advance- Graduate/Post-Graduate Students.

The winners will be provided e-certificates, membership discounts and gifts.

The registered participants will also get a chance to attend the special Gandhi Jayanti Lecture by Dr. U. Kamachi Mudali (ASM International, Board of Trustee and Vice-Chancellor, VIT Bhopal) on " URBAN MINING AND SUSTAINABILITY OF METALS".

For the competition, a panel of judges will review the submissions once all have been posted. The top three will also be acknowledged during the Gandhi Jayanti Special Event organized by MA@IITK. We will also showcase these on our social media handles. Please submit your talks by Friday, Tuesday 29th to be considered for the prizes.
