ЁЯМ╛ Rethinking the Budget: Farmers Deserve More Than Just Lip Service ЁЯМ╛
In a powerful discussion on , Vilas Shinde, Chairman and MD of , highlighted the harsh realities faced by Indian farmers. His message is clearтАФitтАЩs time to move beyond token gestures in the budget and focus on real income growth for the people who feed our nation.
ЁЯТб "If we want to boost the economy, we must first boost farmers' income."
Despite all the talk about agriculture in the budget, hereтАЩs the bitter truth:
тЬЕ 99% of Indian farmers earn less than тВ╣4 lakh a year.
тЬЕ Most donтАЩt even cross тВ╣2 lakh annually.
While the middle class enjoys tax relief up to тВ╣12 lakh, farmers arenтАЩt taxedтАФnot because of special treatment, but because they donтАЩt earn enough to qualify!
Yet, they silently bear a heavy burden of indirect taxes.
ЁЯЪЬ The Hidden Tax Farmers Pay:
Farmers face 18% GST on many agricultural inputs, with no system to claim it back.
For example:
A grape farmer pays тВ╣50,000 per acre every year in GST and service tax.
ThatтАЩs around тВ╣9-10 tax per kg of grapesтАФeven though they donтАЩt earn enough to pay direct taxes.
So, the next time someone says farmers donтАЩt pay taxes, rememberтАФtheyтАЩre already paying a LOT through indirect taxes.
тЪая╕П A Budget for ConsumersтАж But What About Farmers?
Farmers make up 50% of IndiaтАЩs populationтАФ70 crore people.
90% of them are small and marginal farmers, with less than 5 acres of land.
But budget policies seem to care more about consumer relief than farmer welfare.
ShouldnтАЩt the focus be on increasing farmersтАЩ incomes, not just controlling food prices?
Because every rupee a farmer earns flows back into the economy, driving growth.
ЁЯУИ The Real Goal:
Imagine an India where farmers earn enough to fall into the highest income tax slabтАФ
Not because we want to tax them more, but because that would mean farming is finally profitable, not just survivable.
ItтАЩs time to shift the narrative.
ЁЯСЙ LetтАЩs focus not just on feeding the economy but on nourishing the hands that feed the nation.
