The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is a single-seat, twin-engine fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter being developed by India. It will complement the HAL Tejas, the Sukhoi/HAL FGFA, the Sukhoi Su-30MKI and the Dassault Rafale. A naval version is confirmed, as the Indian Navy also contributed to funding. In February 2013, the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) unveiled a 1:8 scale

model at Aero India 2013. Development

In October 2008, the Indian Air Force asked the ADA to prepare a detailed project report on the development of a Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA) incorporating stealth features. In February 2009, ADA director PS Subramanyam said at an Aero-India 2009 seminar, that they are working closely with Indian Air Force to develop a Medium Combat Aircraft. He added that according to the specification provided by the Indian Air Force, it would likely be a 20-ton aircraft powered by two GTX Kaveri engines. In April 2010, the Indian Air Force issued the Air Staff requirements (ASR) for the AMCA which placed the aircraft in the 25-ton category.

Status of HAL AMCA

At Aero India 2015, DRDO Director said that 9 prototypes are confirmed and will go head with construction of the first prototype when funds are going to be allocated in the later part of 2015. DRDO also confirmed that the work on three major Technological issues which includes Thrust Vectoring and Super Cruising engine, AESA radar and Stealth technology is going on full swing and availability of the technology on the aircraft will occur on schedule In 2015, 700 ADA employees were working on the project with 2,000 employees of DRDO and 1,000 employees of HAL supported by over 500 employees of subcontractors of both Indian and foreign firms.

HAL AMCA Sensor

HAL AMCA has high probability of getting infrared based systems like IRST, missile warning systems, laser warning system. The IRST sensors are placed in around the AMCA to provide full angle coverage similar to those of F-35 & Rafale. The proposed IRST system is work similar to the F 35’s EOTS who shares the information’s to friendly units via the satellite and highly secured data links. AMCA also may be fitted with self protection jammer system to jam enemy radar guided missiles from both air and ground. Electronic counter measure systems to confuse the infrared guided missiles and a radar warning receiver too added to detect enemy radar frequency’s.

HAL AMCA will have advanced avionics systems with integrated Glass Cockpit with touchscreen.It will also Cockpit speech recognition system similar to the one used on F-35 II Lightning.It will also have Head Mounted Display and HOTAS ( hands-on-throttle-and-stick) system which will put less workload on pilot as most of essential controls will be on Joystic Controller.

DRDO in talks with foreign companies for advanced fighter jet engine - DRDO is pushing ahead with its plan to develop an Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft and is in talks with top international firms to zero in on an engine for the same, a senior official said today.
