As India advances towards a more secure, self-reliant, and sustainable energy future, higher ethanol blending will play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s next phase of energy transition.

In an opinion article featured in The Times of India, Tarun Sawhney, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Triveni Engineering & Industries Limited, shares perspectives on the strategic importance of accelerating higher ethanol blending to strengthen energy security, reduce crude oil dependence, support rural prosperity, and drive long-term sustainable growth.

Some of the key highlights
- Higher ethanol blends are no longer only an environmental agenda; they are central to India’s energy security and strategic resilience amid global geopolitical instability.
- India’s dependence on imported crude oil, currently around 87%, makes reducing oil imports an economic and national priority.
- With E20 now becoming the national baseline from April 1, 2026, the conversation should shift from whether India can go beyond E20 to how quickly and effectively it can scale higher blends like E25, E85 and eventually E100.
- Policy certainty, stable demand visibility and a predictable procurement framework are now critical to unlocking the next phase of ethanol growth.
- Higher blends such as E25 are realistically achievable in the near term if supported by aligned policies and infrastructure readiness.
- Moving beyond E20 is not only a fuel strategy but also a statement of national confidence, industrial capability and economic sovereignty.
- If pricing, vehicle norms, infrastructure and procurement policies align effectively, India can transition from ethanol blending to global ethanol leadership.
