The highest specification isn’t always the right choice. 📊

Highest iodine value. Highest surface area. Highest hardness. High numbers look impressive on a datasheet, but they don’t guarantee field performance.

Activated carbon must match the exact operating physics of your process:

Water Treatment: Requires targeted pore-size distribution for specific contaminants.

Gold Recovery: Demands attrition resistance to prevent fines and gold loss.

Air Purification: Depends on gas-phase kinetics and bed-pressure drop.

Buying max specs without matching process conditions leads to over-spending and premature system failure.

Carbon selection isn’t a datasheet comparison—it’s an application-engineering decision.

Application first. Specification second.

Gold recovery doesn’t start with gold—it starts with the carbon in your adsorption circuit. ⛏️

Buying activated carbon based on a single datasheet spec is a costly mistake. If your carbon can’t withstand mechanical stress, circuit friction generates fines—and fines mean lost gold directly to tailings.

A reliable CIP/CIL circuit requires a balance of:

>> Pore Structure for rapid adsorption

>> Hardness & Attrition Resistance to stop breakdown

>> Thermal Durability to survive repeated kiln regenerations

Carbon selection isn’t a procurement decision—it’s an application-engineering choice.

Why Hardness Matters More Than You Think

Surface area tells you what activated carbon can do on Day 1.

Hardness helps determine how well it keeps doing it months later.

During handling, backwashing, and continuous fluid flow, carbon is exposed to mechanical stress. Lower mechanical strength can lead to attrition, fines formation, and loss of effective bed depth—impacting performance before the carbon’s adsorption capacity is fully exhausted.

That’s why hardness isn’t just a number on a specification sheet. It’s a factor in long-term bed performance, operational consistency, and service life.

In Vol. 03 of the AXICARB Knowledge Series, we break down where hardness comes from, what it protects against, and why the balance between adsorption capacity and mechanical durability matters.

Better Gold Recovery Starts with Better Adsorption.

In gold recovery, the right activated carbon can make a significant difference.

Coconut shell activated carbon is widely used in Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP) and Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) processes, where its porous structure helps adsorb dissolved gold from the process solution.

But not all activated carbon performs the same way.

Factors such as adsorption capacity and carbon quality can influence adsorption efficiency, gold recovery rates, and overall process performance.

The right grade isn’t just a material choice.

It’s a performance decision.

Better Adsorption. Better Performance.

Quality is not created at the final inspection stage.

It is built into every step of manufacturing.
For activated carbon, consistent performance depends on controlling multiple factors:
• Raw material selection
• Activation conditions
• Process parameters
• Quality testing
Every variable influences the final characteristics of the carbon.
Specifications such as iodine value, hardness, moisture, and ash content provide important insights.
But behind every specification is a manufacturing process designed for repeatability.
Because industrial customers do not depend on one successful batch.
They depend on every batch performing as expected.
Consistency is not a promise.
It is a process.

Why Iodine Value Isn’t the Whole Story !

AXICARB KNOWLEDGE SERIES — Vol. 02

Most of us think
Higher iodine value = better activated carbon?

Not necessarily.

Iodine value is a useful indicator when evaluating activated carbon, particularly for understanding micropore volume.

But activated carbon performance isn’t determined by one number.

The pore size distribution matters too.

Micropores are suited to smaller molecules, while mesopores can be important when dealing with larger organic compounds. So, two carbons with similar iodine values can still behave very differently in an actual application.

That’s why activated carbon selection should start with the application—not just the specification sheet.

Whether it’s water treatment, gold recovery, or air purification, the required pore structure can be different.

At Axicarb, controlled activation is used to develop the pore distribution required for the intended application, supported by consistent manufacturing.

Iodine value is a starting point.
Application-specific performance is the goal.

Consistency in Activated Carbon Starts at Manufacturing.

For B2B customers, the quality of a raw material is only as valuable as its consistency.

Activated carbon used in water treatment, air filtration, and gold recovery becomes part of a larger industrial process. When its performance varies from batch to batch, the impact can extend far beyond the material itself.

That is why quality control in activated carbon manufacturing cannot be treated as a final checkpoint.

It has to be built into the manufacturing process.

Batch-wise testing of parameters such as iodine value, hardness, ash content, and moisture helps ensure that the material meets the required quality standards before it reaches the customer.

Because dependable industrial performance begins with dependable raw materials.

That’s not a promise. It’s a process.

Two Activated Carbons Can Look Identical. Their Performance May Not.

Not all activated carbon performs the same.

The difference is often invisible.

Two carbon samples can appear identical in colour, size, and packaging — yet deliver different results inside an industrial process.

Why?

Because performance comes from the internal structure of the carbon.

Surface area determines the available adsorption sites.

Pore distribution influences which molecules can access those sites.

Together, these characteristics determine how effectively carbon performs for a specific application.

This is why activated carbon selection should never depend on a single specification alone.

The right carbon is not simply the one with the highest number on a datasheet.

It is the one engineered for the process it supports.
