A team of researchers have made it easier to make a gene edit using CRISPR and then observe how the change affects other segments of DNA. The new software tool, called Green Listed, allows them to study gene activity in multiple segments of DNA on the same screen. Researchers can use the program for free in the hope that it will lead more quickly to new medical treatments.

Just a SmidgION: Oxford Nanopore announce iPhone-powered sequencing

With 256 channels per flow cell, SmidgION will be smaller than the company’s existing MinION device, and is expected to come to market in 2017.

MinION has established itself as a versatile field device, and is set to make history later this year as the first device used to sequence DNA in space. With SmidgION Oxford Nanopore are continuing to appeal to the field researcher, with potential applications in monitoring disease outbreaks, and real-time species identification in the fight against wildlife crime.

DBT- BIOTECH INDUSTRIAL TRAINING PROGRAMME (BITP) 2016-17

DBT – BITP is a programme of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, managed by Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL). The objective of BITP is to provide an opportunity to biotech students to acquire practical skills and experience working on projects alongside industry experts as well as to provide an opportunity for the industry to identify potential employees.

Eligibility : Biotech students interested in training in biotech companies may apply online latest by May 5, 2016. B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc./M.Tech./M.V.Sc./MBA in Biotechnology from Indian recognized universities with minimum 50% marks or equivalent grade completed in the year 2015 or 2016 are eligible to apply.

Mode of Selection : Candidates will be selected based on online test followed by interview. Online test would be conducted at centers across the country.

Stipend : During the training stipend of Rs. 10000/- per month is paid to trainees and bench fee is paid to companies to cover expenses towards training.

Documents Required : The following documents must reach by May 8, 2016 to Mr. Manoj Gupta, Manager, Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL). 5th floor, Anuvrat Bhavan, 210, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg, New Delhi – 110002 by speed post /courier:
a. A demand draft of 500/- in favour of “Biotech Consortium India Limited, New Delhi” towards non-refundable application fee. Please write your application id, name, date of birth and mobile no. on the reverse side of the demand draft.
b. Hard copy of the system generated acknowledgement of the application form submitted online.
c. Self attested copy of final mark sheet of the qualifying examination showing the cumulative percentage of marks or equivalent CGPA. For students appearing in the final examination in 2016, filled and signed certificate from Head of the Department on college/university letter head in the format available on the website
