It marks a massive milestone for marine biology, as no new species from this genus had been described since 1982. Scientists meticulously isolated the tiny, resilient creatures from sandy ocean sediment using microscopes and ultra-fine brushes.

Scientists have discovered a new species of tardigrade, fondly known as the marine water bear, off the northeast coast of India. This marks the first time in 43 years that a new member of its elusive genus has been found. An international team, including researchers from CSIR-National Institute of O...

For the first time in India, scientists from Banaras Hindu University - Varanasi and the Indian Institute of Technology Dhanbad have uncovered rare sunflower-shaped pyrite inside coal. Formed by ancient coastal bacteria millions of years ago, these microscopic structures are deeply embedded in the organic matter. Sadly, it makes the coal low-quality, hard to purify, and highly toxic to burn.

Climate change is splitting Maharashtraโ€™s rainfall into extremes

A 31-year climate analysis by Savitribai Phule Pune University and the University of Tokyo shows a growing geographical divide in Maharashtra's Upper Bhima Basin. While regions near the riverโ€™s source and Kalburgi see increasing monsoon intensity, Solapur district faces an alarming, steady decline in crucial rainfall.

A 31-year climate analysis reveals that while the main monsoon rains are increasing, crucial off-season rainfall is becoming highly erratic, threatening agriculture and water security in one of India's most vital river basins.

How rising heat and monsoon floods are merging Kolkataโ€™s cholera seasons

Cholera virus thrives in warm water. Kolkata usually faces a cholera outbreak in summer due to heat-driven bacterial growth, and a monsoon peak due to sanitation-disrupting floods. New mathematical models show that climate change will merge these two waves into a continuous, year-round cholera crisis by 2099.

New mathematical models reveal that rising temperatures and changing rainfall patterns could increase cholera infections by up to 150% by the end of the century, shifting the disease to a nearly year-round threat.

A brand new gecko discovered in Darjeeling!!!

A new bent-toed gecko species, Cyrtodactylus nebulicola, has been discovered in the misty mountains of Darjeeling. A collaborative research from the Zoological Survey of India, Fakir Mohan University, and the Human and Environment Alliance League identified it clinging to rock crevices and house walls in Latpanchar village. This tiny reptile was identified through physical traits and genetic testing.

New bent-toed gecko species discovered in Darjeelingโ€™s cloud forests

Researchers from ZSI, Fakir Mohan University, and HEAL have newly discovered the Latpanchar bent-toed gecko from Darjeeling. This has 12% to 20% genetic difference from its closest relatives. It confirmed the discovery outside the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and added a distinct new branch to the gecko family tree of India.

How a caterpillar's weather forecast help the butterfly survive?

How does a caterpillar grow the right wings for a season it hasnโ€™t seen yet? New research from IISER Thiruvananthapuram decodes these mysteries. Tropical butterflies adapt locally. If the temperature is stable, they start tracking humidity and food quality to decide the season and develop camouflage accordingly.

Scientists have discovered that tropical butterflies use changes in the air's moisture, as well as the nutritional quality of their food, to alter their wing patterns for seasonal camouflage.

Why is the intellectual distance in scientific breakthroughs shrinking?

A new study from IIM Bangalore and Shiv Nadar University of Eminence used citation tracking patterns in the OpenAlex database to measure recombinant novelty in existing ideas. Their study reveals that studies with industry collaborations produce more papers combining varied ideas, but these ideas are conceptually closer together, with fewer out-of-the-box leaps.

A massive analysis of over 11 million scientific papers reveals that while industry involvement boosts the number of new ideas in a field, it may hinder the out-of-the-box thinking that leads to radical scientific breakthroughs.

Did you know that we have never actually photographed our own Milky Way galaxy? As we live inside the galaxy, it has been impossible to capture the entire galaxy from the outside, and all the images out there are just artistic renditions. In this week's , Research Matters, along with Rohini Mahesh, presents to you what neutron stars are and how they function.

Milky way galaxy The Milky Way is a warped spiral galaxy. Our galaxy is a barred spiral about 120,000 light-years wide with a thick central bulge and sweeping spiral arms. Its disk is not perfectly flat: it bends and twists at the edges due to gravitational interactions with nearby companion galaxie...
