Educators’ Cultural Competence in Higher Education: A Qualitative Single Case Study
Dr. Sandra Lilia Flores,
Graduated from Department of English, Sanford College of Education, National University, The United States of America
This study addresses the issue of limited cultural competence among higher education educators and its impact on the English as a second language (ESL) learning process for English language learners (ELLs). The purpose was to explore educators' perspectives regarding their cultural competence to identify ways to enhance the ESL learning experience. Using Lev Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory as a lens, the study examines how educators, as members of society, influence the ESL learning process. A qualitative single case study was conducted involving 12 educators, six of whom were part-time, from 10 academic departments at a community college in Southern California. Data were collected through 12 semi-structured individual interviews and one focus group with four participants. A thematic analysis revealed seven key themes: (a) limited cultural competence; (b) uneasiness toward ELLs from diverse backgrounds; (c) preparedness to teach ELLs; (d) slow progress in cultural competence; (e) limited institutional support; (f) instructional strategies to support ELLs; and (g) creating a safe learning space for ELLs. The findings suggest the need for institutions to provide support and cultural competence training, as well as to consider educators’ recommendations for fostering supportive learning environments for all students.

Paragraph Unity in Writing English Essays
Eric D. Gondree,
Global Education Center, Chukyo University, Japan
Mastering paragraph unity stands as a pivotal skill when learning writing among English language learners (ELLs). This workshop addresses the critical role of paragraph unity and enhancing ELL students' writing proficiency. Understanding how to edit for unity empowers writers to craft paragraphs that are concise and centered on a singular idea, which is particularly beneficial for students struggling with writing complex essays in English. The workshop aims to equip educators with practical techniques to guide ELL students in this essential aspect of self-editing. Participants will engage in hands-on activities designed to dissect paragraphs, identify topic sentences and controlling ideas, and refine both for clarity and focus. By experiencing this process firsthand, teachers will gain insights into effective instructional strategies that accommodate the unique needs of ELL students. Moreover, the workshop emphasizes adaptability, encouraging educators to tailor these activities to suit the diverse linguistic backgrounds and proficiency levels of their students. Through the sharing of best practices, attendees will leave equipped not only to implement these strategies themselves but also to support their colleagues in fostering paragraph unity among ELL learners. Ultimately, this workshop will serve as a practical resource for educators seeking to enhance their instructional repertoire in writing education in English. By mastering paragraph unity, ELL students can develop the proficiency to articulate their ideas clearly and cohesively in English, thereby strengthening their overall language acquisition and academic success.
