MULTI-CAVITI MOLDS: 📐 PRECISION AT THE SERVICE OF EFFICIENCY AND REPEATABILITY ⚙

In the production of technical rubber components, multi-cavity molds make it possible to manufacture multiple identical parts within the same production cycle, combining productivity, dimensional consistency, and repeatability.

The geometry shown in this mold is an example of how complex core and cavity configurations can be engineered to reproduce demanding technical profiles over many cycles.

Depending on the application, solutions of this type can be used for components such as:

🔩 Rubber bushings, sleeves, and technical grommets with complex outer profiles;

WHEN CNC MACHINING IS NOT ENOUGH 🔧⚙️

When complex geometries and tight clearances block end mills, EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is the answer. EDM removes material via controlled electrical discharges ⚡, enabling features inside cavities and between pins that conventional tools cannot reach.

Typical achievable accuracies range from up to ~0.005 mm. In the photos below, you can see the results: we carved a steel pin right on the cavity border for an EPDM hose mold—an area unreachable by standard CNC but solvable with our sinker EDM. Interested in similar precision? Send us a DM.

A GLIMPSE FROM INSIDE OUR WORKSHOP 🔍
What you are seeing in the photograph below is the tool magazine of one of our CNC machining centers: a carousel that holds multiple cutting tools, each mounted in its own tool holder and ready to be used.

HOW DOES IT WORK? 🤔
A CNC machining center can perform several different operations without the operator having to stop the machine and change the tool manually. Here's how:
Step 1️⃣: The CNC software tells the machine which tool is needed for the next operation according to its program.
Step 2️⃣: The tool magazine rotates until the carousel positions the selected tool in the tool-change position.
Step 3️⃣: The automatic tool changer takes over, and the selected tool is transferred to the spindle, while the previous tool is returned to the magazine.
Step 4️⃣: The new tool can now perform its specific operation, streamlining the whole machining process.

WHY SO MANY DIFFERENT TOOLS? ⚒
Because precision mold making requires different tools for different stages of the process. For example, a larger cutter can rapidly remove material during roughing. Smaller cutters can then progressively approach the final geometry, while ball-nose and other specialized tools are used to machine complex surfaces, small radii and fine details.

For mold makers like us, working on complex injection molds and components for the rubber industry, this automation is essential for combining precision, repeatability, and machining efficiency...and that apparently simple wheel is one of the elements that makes it possible.

WHEN PRECISION IS ALMOST INVISIBLE 👀

This mold is a good example of the level of precision required to manufacture small technical rubber components like seals, grommets or connector-related sealing elements.

At first glance, the cavities may appear relatively simple. In reality, the mold incorporates a considerable amount of intricate machining around each individual cavity. The small grooves, channels and carefully defined transitions serve specific functions in the molding process: controlling rubber flow, allowing trapped air to escape, managing excess material and, ultimately, helping reproduce the required geometry consistently across every cavity.

The challenge is not simply machining the cavity itself. 👉 It is achieving dimensional accuracy and surface quality across a complex network of features, often at very small scales, while maintaining perfect alignment and repeatability throughout the mold. At these dimensions, even apparently minor deviations in a groove, edge or vent can affect the behavior of the rubber during molding and the quality of the finished component.

And here's where our company's expertise comes into play, combining advanced machining technologies for hardened metals—including precision CNC and EDM—with the experience of skilled craftsmen who have spent decades working with tooling for the rubber and plastics industries.

🏎 TO PULL THE BRAKE, IT ALL STARTS FROM HERE 🏁

You might be aware that in the automotive world, brake dust boots are specially shaped rings or seals that encase the pistons inside the caliper. They are a critical component for both brake durability and performance, as they prevent brake dust, mud, and road grime from scoring the pistons and causing the caliper to seize.

What you might not know, however, is that it all begins here... The manufacturing process starts with the creation of precision steel molds, where the rubber compound is injected.

But there’s more to it. To achieve the complex geometry required for these dust boots, internal inserts must be meticulously processed to define the shape of the final product.

Precision is paramount, and there is no room for error. Depending on the specific compound, factors like shrinkage rates and internal tolerances must be calculated, alongside injection pressure relative to the geometry of both the part and the mold. Then there is the engineering of the flow cavities... essentially, to ensure the compound forms flawlessly once vulcanized, nothing is left to chance!

From state-of-the-art CNC-milling and surface finishing of the inserts to the final treatment of the mold itself—this is where the magic truly starts!

Work is under way to deliver this beauty.
For this project, we developed a radial runner system. This means the cavities radiate 🔘 symmetrically from a central runner disc,which ensures ⚖ uniform pressure distribution anda balanced flow to all cavities during injection.

Such systems are equipped with a specific gate pin distribution, where thin sub-gates connect each cavity stem to the central runner channel to facilitate clean tear-off.

✅ Better quality, less waste, delivered with a smile. ☺️
