The AISF annual meeting is taking place today and tomorrow in Rome.

This year, four presentations are dedicated to SCCA and SCCA-IgM:
- one oral communication is on the role of SCCA-IgM as a biomarker of non-alcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH) development and progression;
- one poster shows how free serum SCCA is a promising prognostic marker in patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma;
- another poster provides insights into the supportive role of SCCA in cholangiocarcinoma initiation;
- one poster focuses on the correlation between SCCA-IgM levels and survival in cirrhotic patients.

A new study shows for the first time the potential of SCCA-IgM as a monitoring tool for liver disease in Asian patients.

The new clinical study on iXip "PSAIgM2017" has been approved at the Spedali Civili hospital in Brescia, Italy.

The prospective and multicenter study will analyze the correlation between the index iXip and the definitive histological exam in patients who underwent radical prostatectomy.

The study is registered on the ClinicalTrials.gov website with the ID code: NCT03413007.

During the Liver Meeting 2017 that ended yesterday in Washington DC, Gringeri et al. presented a study on SCCA and SCCA-IgM as promising biomarkers for the diagnosis of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA).

Last week a prospective study demonstrating the ability of the biomarker SCCA-IgM to predict the response to therapy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was published in the Scandinavian Journal of Clinical Investigation.

During the last International Liver Congress ( ) that took place in Amsterdam, two studies were presented on the use of the biomarker SCCA-IgM (Hepa-IC, Xeptagen) for the monitoring of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in cirrhotic patients with hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) treated with DAAs.

Based on these studies' results, SCCA-IgM might improve the clinical management of the rising number of patients with hepatitis C treated with DAAs, who are still at risk for HCC even after viral eradication.

A prospective study published in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology described the possible use of SCCA-IgM in the identification of patients at risk for Barrett esophagus (BE) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC).

Based on the new data, SCCA-IgM could be used for screening to identify patients at risk for BE or EAC and to stratify subjects with BE in different risk categories. The biomarker might improve the surveillance protocols currently used on patients at risk for BE or EAC and may reduce the number of endoscopies and their associated costs.
