APPLICATIONS:
-Gas generators -
Devices often similar to small rockets designed to burn and produce large amounts of cool gas instead of maximizing the temperature. Such gas can therefore be used in many applications such as driving turbines or inflating airbags and emergency rafts
-Gas dynamics studies -
This kind of materials can produce a large amount of gas and smoke useful for exp
erimental fluid analysis on surfaces and systems exploiting and operating in turbolent or peculiar aerodynamic flows.
-Space exploration -
The only way to reach the outer atmosphere or beyond was achieved when powerful energetic materials had been developed in the early 20th century.
-Airbags -
Airbags are one of the most useful invention in matter of security. Some might don’t know that they are used in the aerospace field as well. They are used to let rovers and systems land safely on other planets. No matter the field in which they are used, they are opened by a little explosion. It is the most efficient and rapid way to inflate and let them absorb the forces from the impacts.
-Pretensioners -
Mounted on safety belts systems, in case of impact, a little pyrotechnic explosion activates a system that can tighten the belt almost instantly.
-Fire extinguishing system -
It might not seem possible, but in case of outdoor fires controlled explosion can extinguish them in total safety. Pressure and shock waves generated by explosions blow air away from the site, thus removing the oxygen needed by the fire and extinguishing it immediately. Pyrotechnics systems are the most reliable and rapid forms of expelling amount of extinguishing liquid or powders.
-Mining -
It is not a secret that energetic materials can be useful in case of mining. They reduce the working hours amount prevent men to do dangerous and unhealthy long shift works.
-Demolitions -
Energetic materials can be the easy way to blow off unsafe, old or illegal buildings, reducing the waste of time and money.
-Fireworks -
Explosives are used in the making of pyrotechnic artworks and They are massively used in the cinema industry, especially during the making of scenes requiring explosions and special effects in general. In this field the using of explosives points to spectacularity, so it is often used in combination with fuel.
-Ejection seats -
Common on certain type of military airplanes, they allows the pilots to get out of the plane quickly and safely in case of main damages or failures. Nowadays these systems are so performing that they can work in zero-zero condition (zero altitude-zero speed).
-JATO:
Jet Assisted Take Off, it is a jet propulsion system that helps aircrafts take off in particular conditions: overload, short take off run, hot and high conditions….
-EXPLOSIVE BOLTS -
Used for quick remove or release of mechanical components. An explosive charge is included inside the bolt itself and it is armed and ignited remotely. Once that the explosion has finished the parts are free to move separately. It broadly used in aerospace for rockets stage separations. This system is cheap, reliable, efficient and light.
-Avalanche prevention -
It is important to prevent avalanches in particular periods of the year or areas, this is achieved by triggering them before a dangerous amount of snow piles up on the mountain sides, and this is done by causing a controlled fracture of the snow cover or ice.
-Seismology - Lava Flows -
Explosive charges can modify dangerous routes that lava flow may have. Already used for Etna's eruptions between 1983 and 1993 they represent the safer way to prevent catastrophic consequences of eruptions. Seismologists may use explosive to verify reliability of seismologic equipment, verifying with the waves propagation (due to controlled explosions) the underground structure and reaction of the surface to seismic shocks.
-Emergency electric systems -
Energetic materials can be used to produce gas to operate for a small period of time auxiliary or emergency power units on aircrafts or in case of a black out.
