The pattern is familiar: an asset is built, budgets tighten, and maintenance is deferred. Small issues become major failures, and rehabilitation can ultimately cost several times more than timely maintenance.

In water networks, the impact is especially visible. Non-revenue water can exceed 50% in some utilities, with ageing and deteriorating infrastructure contributing significantly to these losses.

Mentorship in engineering is how that knowledge transfers, not through formal training alone, but through the thousands of small moments where an experienced engineer explains why a decision was made the way it was or flags a risk that only experience would catch.

Many senior engineers can trace specific decisions, habits, and ways of thinking to a single mentor who took the time to explain something properly.

If you are early in your career, seek out those conversations actively. Ask questions. Follow up. The technical knowledge you gain in five minutes with the right person may take years to learn any other way.

The best water systems aren’t just well-built; they’re well-understood.

A city’s water network is one of the most complex systems people never think about: thousands of kilometers of pipes, varying pressures, and constant demand managed around the clock.

A hydraulic model makes sense of that complexity. It’s a digital simulation of how water moves through the network, calculating pressure, flow, and system behavior under real-world conditions: peak demand, fire flow, pipe failures, and new connections.

Without a model, decisions rely on experience and estimation.
With one, engineers can test an intervention before it’s built and know the outcome with confidence.

Access to clean water is a human right. Infrastructure is how you deliver it.

That sentence defines the social contract of engineering. When a water network fails, families, especially women and children, bear the cost. When roads are impassable, communities are isolated. When wastewater goes untreated, disease follows.

Infrastructure is not neutral. It distributes opportunity, health, and dignity or withholds them. Engineers who understand this carry their work with a different weight.

Build not just for the project requirements. Build for the people on the other side of the water tap.

Feasibility studies exist to prevent this. They create the space to examine a challenge from multiple angles, technical, financial, environmental, social, before significant resources are committed to a single approach.

A good feasibility study does not just ask “can we build this?” It asks “should we build this, here, at this scale, using this approach, and what are the alternatives?”
