I would like to extend my sympathy and condolences to the families and friends of people who lost their lives and to all those who have been affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Tohoku, Northern Japan. When the Great Hanshin Earthquake occurred in January 1995, I was at home on the 9th floor of a condominium building in Nagata Ward, Kobe. I am fond of Erik Satie (17 May 1866 – 1 J
uly 1925), a French composer and pianist. In those days before the earthquake, my artist friends -- a mime, a jazz musician and I, a soprano -- were making a study of his compositions and styles of creating a performance; however, after the earthquake occurred, I completely lost my interest in the project. The only songs that came from my mouth were “Warabe Uta” & “Doyo”, nursery rhymes that I
used to sing as a child. When I started singing Warabe Uta at a shopping arcade, the act made some people stop and sit down on the road to sing and many of other people joined in with us. It seems not only I myself needed Warabe Uta but also many others. We Kobe people had similar and sad experiences, shared our sympathy with others, were supported by others and felt others were watching over us at that time… however, it was brought home to me how incompetent I was -- rather than by watching news on TV or listening radio broadcasts, I was thinking over and over what the role of music was. Looking back on those days 16 years ago, I realize that singing songs with many people made us feel so much better, so I would like to send with all our strength our singing voice message for friends in Tohoku who live far away. The Doyo songs were sung across generations from grandparents to children, and the greatness of nature’s bounty and marvelous ordinary scenes are in the songs. They can be usually kept in depths of our heart, but now is the time to sing together Doyo songs out loud with all our might! To cheer up our friends, our thoughts and prayers are with you from Kobe. ここから転じて、みんなで力を合わせるときのかけ声になったという説も！このCDから聞こえてくる「えっさ えっさ～♪」の大合唱は、阪神・淡路大震災の被災者である音楽家らの呼び掛けによりウェブサイトに集められた約２００名ぶんの歌声のエールです。日本各地、イタリア、ドイツ、フランスから届いた歌声は幾重にも重なり、あたたかくて力強い世界の応援歌となりました。東北の被災地のみなさまに、私たちからありったけの愛を――。
