SonySugar Company 2025 Ltd, in collaboration with The Kenya Sugar Board (KSB) and Kenya Sugar Research and Training Institute (KESRETI), mounted a successful Farmers' Excellence Centre (FEC) Field Day at the Awendo Green Stadium, today. The colorful event graced by Migori County Deputy Governor Dr Joseph Mahiri, brought together over 700 farmers from the SonySugar catchment area and over 40 exhibitors whose businesses support agribusiness.
Established in April 2025, the SonySugar FEC showcases best agronomic practices four improved cane varieties, minimum tillage land preparation, and bean intercropping to enhance crop diversification and soil fertility. The crop at twelve months, has shown outstanding crop vigour, population density, and uniform canopy development.
"This calendar year, during the April and May long rains, we have planted 454.97 hectares of cane, out of which 90.94 hectares are planted with early maturing varieties" said SonySugar Managing Director, Jane Pamela Odhiambo. Dr Mahiri promised to revive cane farming in Migori County and specifically Kuria regions, which he noted has large tracks of fertile land. He was accompanied by the County CECM for Agriculture Hon. Lukas Musenda.
Farmers also took part in registration for the upcoming elections of the Kenya Sugar Board's Board of Directors on June 25th, 2026, a key step in strengthening farmer representation and ensuring their voices shape the future of the sugar sector. The farmers additionally benefited from assorted free tree seedlings that support agroforestry.
The event was also addressed by the national chair of the Kenya National Federation of Sugarcane Farmers, Ezra Olodi.
