Insulation coordination is defined as the selection of the dielectric strength of equipment in relation to the voltages which can appear on the system for which the equipment is intended and taking into account the service environment and the characteristics of the available protective devices.
In an insulation coordination study, the voltage levels of power system equipment are determined in order to ensure the protection of equipment against overvoltages.

n the past French Transmission System Operator RTE installed 30 Mvar capacitor banks connected to the 63 kV and 90 kV networks. 30 Mvar rated power corresponds to the optimal value to limit the voltage changes when the capacitor bank is switched in, when the short-circuit current (Scc) of the substation is low.
These capacitor banks have an isolated neutral. Indeed, for a 63 kV network, grounded neutral can not be used since the impedance of a 30 Mvar capacitor bank (about 130 ohms capacitive) is rather close to the equivalent zero impedance of a typical 63 kV substation of the South Brittany network (50 ohms inductive).

Nowadays, when every cent is essential when building a substation, it is imperative to optimize each HV equipment without compromising functionality. This technical article deals with a few solutions to optimize high voltage switchgear in terms of space and cost. As an example, ABB’s solutions will be described and analysed. The insulation power‐factor test, similar to the insulation resistance test, allows certain conclusions to be drawn concerning the condition of the transformer insulation.
The significance of the power factor figure is still a matter of opinion. Experience has shown, however, that the power factor is helpful in assessing the probable condition of the insulation when good judgment is used.

The purpose of this thesis was to get to know the theory behind instrument transformers in substations and to create a calculation template in Microsoft Excel which would simplify the current transformer calculation process.
The way of implementing different calculations to be print ready to customers was to make several sheets for different protection functions. The basic instrument transformer theory is covered in the first segment followed by basic relay protection functions.

Now-a-days electrical energy is generated, transmitted and distributed in the form of alternating current. One important reason for the widespread use of alternating current in preference to direct current is the fact that alternating voltage can be conveniently changed in magnitude by means of a transformer.
Transformer has made it possible to transmit a.c. power at high voltage and utilize it at a safe potential. High transmission and distribution voltages have greatly reduced the current in the conductors and the resulting line losses.

Power plant auxiliary system is usually pretty complicated and consists of dozen of motors, transformers, capacitor banks, variable frequency drives, PLCs, and other electrical devices. Therefore, protection relaying cannot be simple, and it requires special attention for each component of a power and control system as well as coordination between them.
