The Most Expensive Words in a Workshop... "While You're There."
Every mechanic has heard this before:
"Since you've already opened it, can you also fix this... and this... and this?"
Sometimes the extra work takes 5 minutes. Sometimes it adds two hours. Either way, every additional job should be discussed and approved before it's done.
The same advice applies to customers.
If your mechanic discovers a genuine safety issue while repairing your car, don't assume they're trying to inflate the bill. Ask them to explain the problem, show you the faulty part, and explain the consequences of leaving it unfixed. A professional mechanic should be able to do that without hesitation.
A healthy workshop relationship is built on three things:
Clear communication.
Written approval for additional work.
Transparency from both sides.
Good mechanics don't perform extra work without permission.
Good customers don't expect extra work for free.
Respect goes both ways.
Question of the day:
Have you ever experienced a situation where extra repairs were suggested during a job? As a mechanic or a car owner, how was it handled, and what do you think is the fairest approach?
Let's hear both sides of the story. 👇
