The difference in high water levels in the ocean, known as tidal variation, is primarily caused by several factors:
1. Gravitational Forces: The primary cause of tides is the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on Earth's oceans. The moon has a stronger effect because it is closer to Earth, causing two tidal bulges—one on the side facing the moon and one on the opposite side. When the water is pulled toward the moon, we experience high tide.
2. Earth's Rotation: As the Earth rotates, different areas move into and out of these tidal bulges, creating the regular rise and fall of sea levels known as tides.
3. The Sun's Influence: Although the sun is farther away, its gravitational pull also affects tides. When the Earth, moon, and sun align during new and full moons, the gravitational forces combine to create spring tides, which result in higher high tides. Conversely, during the first and third quarters of the moon, when the sun and moon are at right angles, neap tides occur, leading to lower high tides.
4. Coastal Geography: Local factors like the shape of the coastline, the depth of the ocean, and underwater topography also affect the range of tides. Narrow bays or inlets can amplify the height of tides, while wide, open coasts might experience less variation.
5. Atmospheric Pressure and Wind: Weather conditions such as strong winds and changes in atmospheric pressure can push more water into coastal areas, temporarily raising water levels, creating phenomena like storm surges.
These factors work together to produce the varying high water levels observed along different coastlines.
