Today, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI ) delegation, led by its President and CEO, Dr. Mark Feinberg, paid a courtesy call to Kenya BioVax Institute, where it was received by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Wesley Ronoh and the Institute’s leadership team. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration in vaccine research and development, clinical trials, technology transfer, workforce capacity building and local manufacturing, with particular emphasis on emerging infectious diseases. The visit provided an opportunity to explore practical areas of cooperation in vaccine development, technology transfer, local manufacturing capacity and Kenya’s broader health security priorities.

A two-day Inception and Alignment Workshop on the Assessment of the Vaccines and Specialized Biologics Manufacturing and Market Landscape in Kenya commenced yesterday at Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts , Nairobi, bringing together representatives from The Ministry of Health , Kenya BioVax Institute, , IAVI , the Kenya Veterinary Vaccines Production Institute - I , the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), the Pharmacy and Poisons Board , and other key stakeholders. The workshop is providing participants with background on the vaccine manufacturing landscape assessment, aligning stakeholders on the proposed work plan, timelines and expected outputs, and introducing the Human-Centred Design (HCD) approach that will guide stakeholder engagement throughout the process. Through this collaborative approach, the assessment seeks to gather diverse perspectives, strengthen coordination and generate practical, evidence-based recommendations to support Kenya’s development of a resilient and commercially sustainable vaccine and specialized biologics manufacturing ecosystem.

As part of preparations for the installation and operationalization of mRNA manufacturing equipment, staff members participated in a specialized capacity-development programme conducted byThermo Fisher Scientific . The training covered key areas, including an introduction to Radiance, pharmaceutical analytics capabilities, purification capabilities and the Genetic Sciences Division, strengthening the team’s technical understanding of the systems, processes and technologies that will support mRNA research and manufacturing. This initiative is helping to build a skilled, confident and ready workforce capable of supporting successful equipment installation, technology adoption and the advancement of local vaccine manufacturing.

Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Health Visits Kenya BioVax

Kenya BioVax was honoured to host the Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Health, led by the Chairperson, Hon. Nyikal James, during a familiarization visit aimed at assessing the Institute’s progress in advancing Kenya’s local vaccine and biologics manufacturing agenda. The visit centred on Kenya BioVax’s mandate, strategic priorities, ongoing infrastructure development, technical capacity strengthening, and Kenya’s broader goal of reducing dependence on imported vaccines and essential health products.

During the engagement, the Committee was briefed on the Institute’s key milestones, including progress towards operationalizing vaccine manufacturing capacity, strengthening quality systems, building partnerships for technology transfer, and positioning Kenya as a regional hub for vaccine production and health security. The discussions also highlighted the importance of sustained policy, legislative, and budgetary support in enabling Kenya BioVax to deliver on its mandate and contribute meaningfully to pandemic preparedness, Universal Health Coverage, and local pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Kenya BioVax Institute participated in the 2nd Edition of the Mau Conservation Marathon as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility commitment to environmental stewardship and community empowerment. At Chebotoi Primary School in Kiptagich Location, the Institute planted more than 200 indigenous tree seedlings and engaged pupils and members of the surrounding community in discussions about the importance of protecting the environment while practicing good health. The visit also provided an opportunity to raise awareness of Kenya’s progress towards the local manufacturing and commercialization of vaccines, and the role this will play in strengthening national health security.

Later, the Kenya BioVax team joined thousands of participants and runners from different regions in the Mau Conservation Marathon, united by a common purpose: supporting the conservation and restoration of the Mau Forest. The initiative demonstrated the importance of collective action in safeguarding natural ecosystems while advancing a healthier, more resilient future for communities across Kenya.

Building a stronger local pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem requires meaningful collaboration across government, industry and research institutions. In this spirit, the Kenya Association of Pharmaceutical Industry (KAPI) and Kenya BioVax Institute Limited (KBI) held discussions to explore opportunities for joint action in advancing local manufacturing and improving access to essential health products. The engagement focused on potential partnerships in innovation, technology transfer, capacity strengthening and sustainable production of quality medicines, vaccines and other health technologies for Kenya and the region.

A compelling conversation on Kenya’s path towards health security and pharmaceutical self-reliance unfolded during the Kenya BioVax Institute-sponsored main plenary at the 46th Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya Annual Scientific Conference. Held under the theme, “Local Vaccine and Biotherapeutics Manufacturing as a Catalyst for Health Security and Pharmaceutical Sector Transformation,” the discussion examined the practical actions required to build a sustainable local manufacturing ecosystem. Dr. Ondari Mogeni of the International Vaccine Institute underscored the need to connect research, disease surveillance, clinical development and manufacturing to deliver locally relevant health solutions.

Dr. Wesley Ronoh, Chief Executive Officer of Kenya BioVax Institute, highlighted the importance of sustained investment, technology transfer, skilled talent, quality systems and market access. James Kibutha Kimeu of IAVI focused on product-development partnerships and investments that move innovation from research into production and public-health impact, while Dr. Tracy Njonjo of the Ministry of Health emphasised policy, regulatory, procurement and supply-chain measures that can support quality-assured locally manufactured products.

In his closing remarks, Kenya BioVax Institute Board Chairman Dr. Charles Githinji noted that local manufacturing is not only an industrial ambition, but also a public-health and health-security imperative. He called for coordinated action among government, regulators, academia, industry, health professionals and development partners to translate dialogue into implementation, strengthen local capability and position Kenya as a regional hub for vaccines and biotherapeutics.
