Most businesses ask "how much does solar cost?"
The better question is: how fast does it pay for itself?
Here is how to calculate it — no spreadsheet needed.
Say your business spends Ksh 30,000 a month on electricity. A properly sized solar system cuts that bill by 80%, saving you Ksh 24,000 every month.
If the system costs Ksh 600,000 installed, your simple payback period is:
600,000 ÷ 24,000 = 25 months
Just over 2 years. After that, every month is money back in the business — for the next 20+ years the panels are running.
The variables that move that number:
— Your current monthly bill (higher bills = faster payback)
— The size and quality of the system installed
— Whether you add battery backup or stay grid-tied
This is why a proper energy audit matters before any quote. The numbers have to be yours, not a guess.
