Kenya’s sustainable transport sector is seeing a new wave of inclusive leadership as the intensive six-month Women in e-Mobility programme reached its climax this week. The initiative, designed to equip female entrepreneurs with the critical skills, networks, and technical expertise needed to scale in the green economy, concluded with a robust three-day workshop focused on practical industry application, policy, and technology.

The final workshop offered participants an immersive look into the commercial realities of running an electric vehicle (EV) venture:

•Day 1 (Industry Immersion): Entrepreneurs visited Kiri EV, a local enterprise supported by the Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC). Participants received hands-on exposure to the foundational building blocks of the trade—ranging from battery technology and electric motorcycle assembly to customer acquisition strategies.

•Day 2 (Data & Dialogue): Industry researchers and entrepreneurs convened to unpack evidence-based data, discussing the systemic challenges and emerging opportunities for women in Kenya's rapidly growing EV ecosystem.

•Day 3 (Next-Gen Tech): The curtains closed with a forward-looking track on emerging technology, where entrepreneurs explored how to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize operations and unlock new business models.

The practical impact of the cohort’s journey was captured by participant Dorcas Nyamanya, who noted how the initiative bridged the gap between theory and real-world deployment.

"The programme challenged us to sharpen our vision and refine our business models. What began as an idea has evolved into a clearer, more practical pathway for launching my e-mobility venture that now enables women to get bikes and earn money," Nyamanya noted.

The Women in e-Mobility programme is a collaborative effort implemented by Kenya Climate Innovation Center, Coventry University London, the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), and Coventry University Social Enterprise (CUSE). Funded by the British Council, the initiative marks an essential milestone toward ensuring that Kenya's transition to clean transport is both economically viable and socially inclusive.

NCBA Bank has entered into a strategic asset finance partnership with ePureMotion, aiming to accelerate Kenya’s green transport transition by lowering the cost barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Backed by NCBA’s KES 2 billion e-mobility commitment, the collaboration offers targeted financial solutions across both private and public transport sectors.

The financing frameworks include:

1.Private Buyers: Qualifying salaried individuals can access up to 100% financing with a 72-month repayment window.

2.Public Transport (PSVs): Individual SACCO members can secure up to 80% financing over 48 months for 16-seater electric matatus.

3.Fleet Operators: Established PSV companies and SACCOs can scale with up to 90% financing over a 60-month period.

Lennox Mugambi, NCBA Group Director of Asset Finance, emphasized that the partnership reflects the bank's commitment to accelerating sustainable mobility and economic growth. Dr. Gilbert Saggia, CEO of ePureMotion, added that combining their EV expertise with NCBA’s financial strength makes cleaner transport highly accessible to the Kenyan market.

By tackling upfront capital hurdles for daily commuters and mass transit operators alike, this alliance marks a practical leap forward for the region's sustainable ecosystem.

KCB Group , The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) and ePureMotion have unveiled a dedicated EV charging station for Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) in Nairobi's Buruburu Estate—a major milestone in transforming how Kenya moves.

This isn't just about charging electric buses and matatus. It's about building an entire ecosystem:
• Reliable EV charging infrastructure
• Vehicle maintenance & technical support
• Operator training and skills development
• Smart digital fleet management
• Lower operating costs for operators
•Cleaner, smarter and more sustainable public transport

Backed by KCB's financing initiative launched in 2024, the project empowers matatu operators to modernize their fleets while proving that electric mobility is no longer the future—it's happening now.

The Buruburu hub is expected to become the blueprint for EV public transport across Kenya.
