Structure Details: The plan calls for galvanised steel finish on structural elements, including W6x15 steel beams and 40x40x3mm Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) members.
Dimensions: The staircase is designed with a floor-to-floor height of 3.800m, a riser height of 0.175m, and a tread depth of 0.380m.
Fabrication & Assembly: The drawing specifies that all joints should be welded unless otherwise noted, and landing widths are standardized at 1.200m.

Phases of Road Construction
(Preliminary Survey to Pouring Asphalt)
1. Preliminary Survey & Reconnaissance
- First inspection of the proposed road route
Engineers study:
• Terrain and topography
• Existing roads and settlements
• Drainage patterns
• Soil condition
• Environmental impact
- Survey equipment used:
• GPS
• Total Station
• Drone mapping
• Leveling instruments
- Purpose:
To identify the safest, shortest, and most economical alignment

2. Detailed Survey & Design
- Accurate measurements and mapping are carried out
Activities include:
• Centerline establishment
• Contour mapping
• Soil investigation
• Traffic studies
- Engineers and Surveyors prepare:
• Road geometry
• Cross-sections
• Pavement thickness design
• Drainage design
- Output:
Final construction drawings and BOQ (Bill of Quantities)

3. Site Clearing & Grubbing
Removal of:
• Trees
• Bushes
• Stumps
• Debris
• Existing weak materials
- Heavy equipment used:
• Bulldozers
• Excavators
• Chainsaws
- Purpose:
To prepare a clean and workable construction corridor

4. Earthwork & Excavation
- Cutting high ground and filling low areas
Activities include:
• Excavation
• Borrow pit filling
• Embankment formation
• Soil replacement
• Compaction begins gradually
- Machines used:
• Excavators
•Dump trucks
• Motor graders
• Rollers
- Goal:
To achieve the required road formation level

5. Subgrade Preparation
- Natural soil is shaped and compacted
Weak soils may be carted away or stabilized using:
• Cement
• Lime
• Laterite
- Tests conducted:
• Moisture content test
• CBR test
• Density test
- Importance:
The subgrade is the foundation of the entire pavement structure

6. Drainage Construction
Construction of:
• Side drains
• Culverts
• Channels
• Box culverts
- Prevents water from damaging the road
Poor drainage is one of the major causes of road failure

7. Sub-Base Layer Construction
First structural pavement layer above the
• subgrade
• Materials commonly used:
• Crushed stone
• Laterite
• Gravel
- Activities:
• Spreading
• Watering
• Grading
• Compaction
- Equipment used:
• Graders
• Water tankers
• Vibratory rollers
- Function:
Distributes traffic load evenly

8. Base Course Construction
- Strong load-bearing layer placed above the sub-base
Materials:
• Crushed aggregates
• Stone base
• Stabilized materials
- Requires high compaction and level accuracy
Importance:
Provides structural strength for heavy traffic loads

9. Prime Coat Application
- Bituinous liquid sprayed on the base layer
Purpose:
• Binds loose particles
• Improves adhesion between layers
• Reduces dust pe*******on
- Equipment used:
• Bitumen distributor/sprayer

10.Tack Coat Application
- Thin asphalt emulsion sprayed before asphalt laying
- Helps old and new asphalt layers bond properly
- Prevents layer separation and pavement cracks

11.Asphalt Production
- Asphalt materials are produced in an asphalt plant
Components mixed:
• Bitumen
• Sand
• Stone aggregates
• Filler materials
- Mixture is heated to the required temperature
- Quality control is very important at this stage

12. Asphalt Laying (Paving)
- Hot mix asphalt transported to site using dump trucks
- Asphalt paver spreads the material evenly
Workers monitor:
• Thickness
• Temperature
• Alignment
• Surface smoothness
Critical stage that determines required quality

13. Compaction of Asphalt
- Fresh asphalt is compacted immediately
• Rollers used:
• Steel drum rollers
• Pneumatic rollers
- Objectives:
• Remove air voids
• Increase strength
• Achieve smooth finish
Proper compaction improves road lifespan

14. Finishing & Quality Inspection
- Final checks conducted on:
• Surface level
• Slope
• Thickness
• Compaction
• Drainage efficiency
- Road markings and signs may be installed
- Defects are corrected before opening to traffic

Why Each Phase Matters
Every stage contributes to:
• Road durability
• Safety
• Smooth driving experience
• Reduced maintenance cost
- Skipping or poorly executing one phase can lead to:
• Cracks
• Potholes
• Settlement
• Early road failure

- Common Heavy Equipment Used
• Bulldozer
• Excavator
• Motor Grader
• Asphalt Paver
• Vibratory Roller
• Water Tanker
• Dump Truck
• Bitumen Sprayer
• Wheel Loader
