In Koh Kapik Ramsar Site within Koh Kong province, a dedicated nursery team tends to hundreds of diverse mangrove seedlings every day, watering, monitoring, composting and caring for each plant with incredible dedication.
No fancy equipment, just knowledge, hard work and a deep connection to the ecosystem they call home.

The nursery team appreciates how important mangroves are. "Mangrove forests are valuable habitats for wildlife," said Ms SERB Sophea, Deputy of the Koh Kapik community protected area committee (CPA) and nursery coordinator. "They enrich the soil, help prevent flooding, and provide important ecological benefits."

This world Mangrove Day we celebrate the people leading mangrove restoration for the benefit of all the area’s inhabitants, from fishers and farmers to otters and fishing cats!

Meet Vichet Roth, one of FCEE's Biodiversity Researchers. "To me, conservation goes beyond just protecting the environment; it’s about creating meaningful connections with the land and the people who live there," he said.

Vichet is regularly in the field deploying and checking camera traps, supporting community stakeholders and engaging local authorities. Meanwhile, in the office Vichet contributes to analysis, reporting and facilitation. He's currently upskilling his data analysis with R software.

"I hope to inspire others to join this crucial cause as we work together to preserve Cambodia’s rich biodiversity!"

Meet Vichet Roth

Vichet’s journey with FCEE began in 2023, where he works as a Biodiversity Researcher tackling key conservation challenges—especially for the Fishing Cat and other endangered species in Cambodia.

With a Master’s degree in Biodiversity Conservation from the Royal University of Phnom Penh (2018), Vichet focused his research on the use of bear parts in rural communities. He then spent nearly five years with Free the Bears as a Research Assistant, contributing to ecological and social research, organizing fieldwork, and ensuring research protocols were followed.

At FCEE, Vichet is passionate about working with local communities, conducting surveys, and setting up camera traps in key biodiversity areas. His time in the field helps him better understand the complex relationships between wildlife and their habitats.

To Vichet, conservation goes beyond just protecting the environment; it’s about creating meaningful connections with the land and the people who live there.He’s dedicated to developing effective strategies and recommendations to protect Cambodia’s biodiversity.

Check out the first daytime footage of fishing cat kittens in Cambodia! They are learning from their mother how to fish and hunt, before they disperse into the mangroves on their own. This proof of a breeding population gives us hope for fishing cats and other threatened species in the area. This video was captured in the mangroves of Kampong Smach Marine Fisheries Management Area, a new KBA in Kampong Som province. Every sighting like this reminds us why protecting wetlands matters.

🎉🌿🐾 What a good news!!!

Our conservation partner, Vanessa Herranz Muñoz, founder of Fishing Cat Ecological Enterprise, recently supported the establishment of a second community-run mangrove nursery at the Koh Kapik Ramsar Site in Cambodia.

This initiative strengthens mangrove forest restoration efforts led by local communities — and the success is already evident! A camera trap in the area captured a fishing cat 🐱🐟, showing how restored habitats can support both biodiversity and people. 💚🌊

Meet Sodane Hem, a passionate team member at the Fishing Cat Ecological Enterprise in Cambodia.

Sodane’s journey began when she volunteered in endangered species awareness programs. That experience helped her realise that conservation was her true passion.

She joined the Fishing Cat Ecological Enterprise in 2021 and later took a break to pursue her Master’s in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (2023–2026). For Sodane, returning to FCEE was an easy decision because it allows her to work closely with nature while learning about mammals, fish, and bird species.

She enjoys learning hands-on from local communities, experts, and scientists, while exploring the beautiful landscapes and ecosystems of Cambodia. For her, conservation is about connecting with both nature and people.

During this journey, she began noticing many bird species she had never paid attention to before and inspired her friends to start observing wildlife too.

Sodane values the inclusive culture at FCEE, where people from different backgrounds are welcomed and coastal women are supported through work in mangrove nurseries.

Looking ahead, she hopes to strengthen her skills in data and spatial analysis to further support conservation efforts.

Who lives in Cambodia’s wetlands? Endangered primates, like Indochinese Silvered Langurs in the Tonle Sap lake! Our cameras in Boeung Chhmar and Stung Sen Ramsar Sites recorded the species at almost 50% of locations, suggesting flooded forests are highly important for the species. Let’s protect them for Cambodia’s wildlife.
