Today, we observe International Asteroid Day, a global awareness campaign dedicated to learning about asteroids, their role in our Solar System, and the importance of planetary defense.

Observed annually on June 30, the day commemorates the 1908 Tunguska Event, the largest recorded asteroid impact event in modern history. It serves as a reminder that understanding near-Earth objects is not just about exploring space, but also about safeguarding our future.

Every asteroid carries clues about the formation of our Solar System, while ongoing detection and tracking efforts help scientists identify potential hazards long before they pose a threat.

🌠 Lyrids 2026: Where Science Meets Wonder 🌠
As Earth passes through the debris trail of Comet Thatcher, tiny cosmic particles enter our atmosphere at speeds of nearly 48 km/s, creating brilliant streaks of light ✨
Peaking on April 21–22, the Lyrid Meteor Shower may bring 15–20 meteors per hour, with occasional fireballs and glowing trails that linger in the night sky 🌌
⏰ When to watch:
The best time is after midnight on April 21, with peak activity between 2:00 AM and 5:30 AM on April 22 🌙
📍 Where & how to watch:
From places like Dambulla or anywhere in the Central Province, you have a great chance—especially away from streetlights.
Look toward the northeast sky and find the bright star Vega rising late in the evening ✨
💡 Tip:
Skip binoculars or telescopes—just lie back, let your eyes adjust, and take in the whole sky 🌌
But beyond the science…
Each meteor is a fleeting story—
A spark from the past, traveling through time,
Only to vanish in a moment of brilliance 🌠
