Shell Lubricants are the companies of Royal Dutch Shell plc that are engaged in the lubricants business. The companies manufacture and blend products for use in applications ranging from consumer motor oil to heavy industrial lubricants and commercial transport oils. The Shell Lubricants portfolio of top quality brands includes Shell Helix, Shell Rimula, Shell Rotella, Shell Spirax and Shell Tellus.

Challenge

Shell Lubricants, a global leader in the lubricants industry, was strengthening its indirect distribution channel to deliver growth to both Shell and its distributor network. To continue building commitment and loyalty, Shell wanted to insure it was delivering value to distributors and meeting their core needs.

Response

Shell Lubricants distributor loyalty to complement the internal assessment programs already in place. The global distributor loyalty tracking program was designed to gather structured feedback on the essential elements of Shell’s distributor offer and to establish a baseline for tracking progress over time. The key to leveraging the feedback was to integrate the insights into Shell’s annual business planning process. Distributors into the global and local planning sessions with Shell managers are to help them build on their strengths and address any improvement opportunities.

Outcomes

Shell Lubricants was able to make specific, targeted enhancements in the way it markets, trains and supports distributors. Shell Lubricants has seen continued improvement in its distributor relationships and year-over-year volumes and business results, the distributor business was showing significant volume growth at a global level compared to the prior year, well above market rates. Shell is in the process of expanding the distributor loyalty program to all its key markets.
