A duct can fit perfectly on a drawingโ€”and still perform poorly on site.

Uneven airflow. Excessive noise. High pressure losses. These are the challenges that make thoughtful duct design essential.

๐Ÿ“˜ Introducing the HVAC Duct Design & Sizing Handbook from Nexora Design Lab.

A practical engineering guide for HVAC professionals and learners looking to strengthen their understanding of duct design and sizing.

When designing a duct system, every decision connects:

๐Ÿ’จ Airflow requirements influence duct size.
๐Ÿ“ Duct dimensions affect velocity and available space.
โš™๏ธ Routing and fittings influence pressure losses.
๐Ÿ”Š Design choices affect noise, comfort and system performance.

Understanding those connections helps you ask better questions, review designs more critically and move beyond sizing by habit.

Whether youโ€™re developing your HVAC skills or building your engineering reference collection, explore the handbook and see how it fits your work.

โ„๏ธ Want to Build a Strong Foundation in HVAC?

HVAC can feel complicated when youโ€™re starting out.

Cooling loads. Air-conditioning systems. Ductwork. Ventilation. Equipment selection. Psychrometrics. Chilled water systems. Controls.

Thereโ€™s a lot to understand โ€” and jumping straight into advanced calculations without mastering the fundamentals often makes the learning process harder.

๐Ÿ“˜ HVAC Beginnerโ€™s Guide by Nexora Design Lab was created to provide a structured and practical starting point for people who want to understand HVAC engineering properly.

๐Ÿ”ง What will you learn?

โœ… HVAC fundamentals and terminology
โœ… How common air-conditioning systems work
โœ… Major HVAC equipment and their functions
โœ… Cooling and heating concepts
โœ… Air distribution and ductwork fundamentals
โœ… Ventilation and indoor air quality
โœ… Chilled-water system basics
โœ… Practical engineering concepts used in real projects

๐Ÿ‘ท Who is it for?

๐ŸŽ“ Engineering students
๐Ÿ‘ท Junior HVAC & MEP engineers
๐Ÿ”ง HVAC technicians
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Construction professionals moving into MEP
๐Ÿ“ Engineers who want to refresh their HVAC fundamentals

The objective isn't simply to memorize formulas.

It is to understand why HVAC systems are designed the way they are, how the components work together, and how to build the foundation needed for more advanced HVAC design.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Heat Pump vs. Gas Furnace โ€” Which Can Save More on Your Energy Bill?

Both systems heat your home, but they work very differently.

โšก Heat Pumps
โœ… Provide both heating & cooling
โœ… Can deliver around 2โ€“4ร— as much heat energy as the electrical energy consumed, depending on conditions
โœ… No on-site combustion
โœ… Particularly attractive in mild to moderate climates

๐Ÿ”ฅ Gas Furnaces
โœ… Strong heating performance in cold weather
โœ… Often lower initial equipment cost
โœ… Typically around 90โ€“98% AFUE for modern high-efficiency models
โŒ Cooling requires a separate AC system
โŒ Uses natural gas and produces on-site combustion emissions

๐Ÿ’ก Which costs less to operate?

There is no universal winner. The answer depends on your climate, electricity and gas tariffs, equipment efficiency, building load, and operating hours. A proper life-cycle comparison should consider both initial investment and annual energy consumption.

๐Ÿข Ductless vs. Ducted: The Future of Basement Ventilation

Traditional basement ventilation relies on extensive supply and exhaust ductwork. While effective, large ducts can consume valuable ceiling space, reduce headroom, complicate coordination, and increase installation requirements.

๐Ÿš€ Jet Fan Systems offer a different approach.

Instead of distributing air through extensive duct networks, strategically positioned jet fans create high-velocity air movement that directs pollutants and smoke toward designated extraction points.

But effective jet fan design isn't simply about placing fans around a car park.

๐Ÿ’ป This is where CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) becomes critical.

CFD modeling allows engineers to simulate:

โœ… Airflow patterns and velocities
โœ… CO and pollutant dispersion
โœ… Smoke movement and clearance
โœ… Dead zones and recirculation areas
โœ… Jet fan locations, direction and performance
โœ… Interaction with supply and extract systems

The result can be a basement ventilation system with:

๐Ÿ”น Less ductwork
๐Ÿ”น Better available headroom
๐Ÿ”น Greater architectural and MEP flexibility
๐Ÿ”น More targeted airflow control
๐Ÿ”น Optimized fan arrangement
๐Ÿ”น Performance verified before installation

For large car parks and complex basements, the question is increasingly becoming not simply โ€œHow much air do we need?โ€ but โ€œHow will that air actually move through the space?โ€

That is where engineering simulation can make the difference.

๐ŸŒฟ The 2025/2026 HVAC Refrigerant Transition: What Homeowners Need to Know

The HVAC industry is moving away from higher-GWP refrigerants such as R-410A toward lower-GWP alternatives, including R-454B and R-32.

๐Ÿ”น R-410A: GWP โ‰ˆ 2,088
๐Ÿ”น R-32: GWP โ‰ˆ 675
๐Ÿ”น R-454B: GWP โ‰ˆ 465

Both R-454B and R-32 are classified as A2L refrigerants, meaning they have lower toxicity and mild flammability. New equipment using these refrigerants therefore incorporates specific safety and design requirements.

๐Ÿ  What does this mean for homeowners?

Your existing R-410A air-conditioning system does not automatically need to be replaced. It can continue operating and be serviced while it remains practical and economical to maintain.

However, when purchasing a new-generation system, you may increasingly encounter equipment specifically designed for R-454B or R-32.

โš ๏ธ Important: R-454B and R-32 are not simple drop-in replacements for R-410A. Refrigerant selection must match the equipment design and manufacturer requirements, and servicing should be performed by appropriately trained technicians.

The transition is ultimately about reducing the climate impact of HVAC systems while maintaining the comfort homeowners expect.

๐ŸŒŽ Same comfort. Lower-GWP refrigerants. A more sustainable HVAC future.
