Slump Test

1. Zero Slump (0-25mm)

Description: Very stiff concrete mix, almost no slump.

Use in Construction:

Pavements and Roads: Concrete for pavements or curbs where little or no flow is needed.

Precast Concrete Elements: Used for making products like beams, columns, or blocks that require high strength and minimal settlement.

Foundations (Mass concrete): For foundations requiring minimal shrinkage and controlled compaction.

Grouting: Used for grout mixtures in certain structural applications.

Tunnels and Underwater Construction: High-density, stiff mixes where precise placement is critical.

2. True Slump (50-100mm)

Description: Moderate slump indicating a workable concrete mix.

Use in Construction:

Slabs and Beams: Ideal for general structural concrete works like beams, slabs, and columns in buildings.

Foundation Walls: For creating strong foundation walls where some flowability is needed for proper settling.

Concrete Roads and Driveways: Most commonly used in road construction where workability is essential for finishing and smooth pouring.

Masonry Works: Concrete used in brickwork or block work, requiring medium workability.

3. Shear Slump (100-150mm)

Description: Concrete shows signs of deformation, such as collapsing or slumping in one direction.

Use in Construction:

Not recommended for general use. A shear slump usually signals that the mix is too wet or that segregation is occurring.

Adjust Mix: Requires adjustments to mix proportions to prevent issues like excessive bleeding, segregation, or poor strength.

Occasionally Used in Specialized Situations: In applications where shear resistance is not a primary concern but flowability is required.

4. Collapse Slump (150-200mm or more)

Description: Concrete mix flows easily and loses its shape entirely, forming a puddle.

Use in Construction:

Not suitable for most construction works. Collapse slump indicates a too-wet mixture that is not cohesive, leading to issues like segregation, poor bonding, and reduced strength.

Pumped Concrete: Occasionally used for pumped concrete where the concrete needs to flow easily through pipes or pumps, but even then, the mix should not be overly wet.

Concrete with High Water Content: Often used in special applications requiring high fluidity, but it may require additional additives or plasticizers to maintain proper strength and stability.

Cracks on a concrete slab can occur due to various reasons. Here some common causes:

1. Shrinkage: Concrete shrinks as it cures, leading to cracks.
2. Settlement: Soil settlement or uneven foundation can cause cracks.
3. Thermal expansion: Concrete expands and contracts with temperature changes, causing cracks.
4. Poor construction: Inadequate preparation, mixing, or finishing can lead to cracks.
5. Weak subbase: A weak or unstable subbase can cause cracks.
6. Overloading: Excessive weight or pressure can cause cracks.
7. Weathering: Exposure to weather, especially freeze-thaw cycles, can cause cracks.
8. Chemical damage: Exposure to chemicals, like salt or acid, can damage concrete.
9. Poor drainage: Water accumulation can cause erosion and cracks.
10. Soil movement: Soil movement or erosion beneath the slab can cause cracks.
11. Tree roots: Tree roots growing beneath the slab can cause cracks.
12. Poor curing: Inadequate curing can lead to weak concrete and cracks.

This is called Concrete Spalling.

Concrete spalling can be caused by several factors, including:
Corrosion of reinforcement

Chemical exposure
Alkali-silica reaction
Poor quality concrete
Carbonation
Fire exposure
Inadequate depth of cover

How to Treat Concrete Spalling

Concrete spalling, characterized by the flaking or breaking off of surface layers of concrete, is a common problem caused by corrosion of reinforcing steel, freeze-thaw cycles, poor concrete mix, or insufficient cover over reinforcing bars. Proper treatment is essential to restore the structural integrity and aesthetics of the affected concrete. Below are steps to effectively treat concrete spalling:

1. Assessment
Inspection: Identify the extent and severity of spalling. Check for underlying issues such as rusted reinforcement or poor drainage.
Testing: Perform tests to assess the structural soundness of the concrete and the extent of corrosion in the reinforcement.

2. Preparation
Surface Cleaning: Remove loose or delaminated concrete using tools like hammers, chisels, or high-pressure water jets.
Rust Removal: Clean exposed reinforcing steel with wire brushes or sandblasting to remove rust and prevent further corrosion.

3. Repair Materials Selection
Repair Mortar: Choose a suitable repair mortar or concrete mix compatible with the existing structure in terms of strength, shrinkage, and thermal expansion.
Bonding Agent: Apply a bonding agent to ensure proper adhesion between the old and new concrete.

4. Application
Reinforcement Protection: Apply a corrosion inhibitor or protective coating to the cleaned reinforcement to prevent future rusting.
Concrete Application: Apply the repair mortar in layers, ensuring each layer is compacted and free of voids. For deeper spalls, use multiple layers to build up to the original surface level.

5. Finishing
Surface Finishing: Smooth and level the repaired area to match the surrounding surface. Use appropriate finishing tools, such as trowels or floats.
Curing: Cure the repair material properly to achieve the desired strength and durability. This may involve covering the area with wet burlap, plastic sheeting, or using curing compounds.

6. Prevention
Regular Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections and maintenance to identify and address issues early.
Protective Coatings: Apply sealers or waterproof coatings to protect the concrete surface from water ingress and freeze-thaw damage.
Drainage Improvement: Ensure proper drainage around concrete structures to prevent water accumulation and pe*******on.
By following these steps, concrete spalling can be effectively treated, extending the structure's lifespan and maintaining its safety and appearance.

Do well to contact a professional to help you handle such issues if it arises in your building.
