LEC Clarifies Cause of Temporary Power Disruption; Assures Public of Its Commitment to Improving Electricity Supply
Monrovia, Liberia โ January 20, 2026: The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) wishes to inform the public that the recent abrupt power disruptions experienced in parts of the country were not due to inadequate electricity supply, nor has LEC reached any critical stage of load shedding.
The interruptions experienced over the last few days, including todayโs disruption, resulted from abrupt trips on the Cรดte dโIvoireโLiberiaโSierra LeoneโGuinea (CLSG) Transmission Line, which serves as the regional interconnected electricity backbone linking the four countries. When such trips occur on the CLSG network, they generate system feedback into local substations. To protect critical equipment and prevent extensive damage, LECโs automated protection systems are designed to immediately shut down affected components.
LEC assures the public that this protective response is a standard and necessary safety mechanism to safeguard infrastructure and ensure system reliability.
Following the incident, LECโs technical teams promptly intervened, and power is being successfully restored to affected areas. Normal operations have since resumed.
The Liberia Electricity Corporation sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary disruption may have caused and reassures the public of its continued commitment to the reliable provision of electricity across the country. LEC remains steadfast in strengthening its systems and collaborating with regional partners to enhance grid stability.
