ESOL Participates in Ongoing WAFEO and SLIE Engineering Conference in Sierra Leone

The Engineering Society of Liberia (ESOL) is actively participating in the ongoing week-long engineering conference jointly organized by the West African Federation of Engineering Organizations (WAFEO) and the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE) in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Key discussions are centered on infrastructure development, engineering innovation, climate resilience, digital transformation, professional standards, and regional cooperation.

As part of the ongoing proceedings, the Liberian delegation is actively participating in technical sessions, panel discussions, networking engagements, and strategic meetings designed to strengthen collaboration among engineering institutions across the sub-region. These engagements provide valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, professional growth, and the exchange of best practices.

Speaking on the importance of ESOL’s participation, President Engr. David D. Wounuah emphasized that the conference serves as an important platform for advancing engineering excellence and building stronger partnerships within West Africa. ESOL Commends Ministry of Public Works for Landmark Salary Reform and Calls on Other Engineering Institutions to Follow Suit

Monrovia, Liberia | June 11, 2026

The Engineering Society of Liberia (ESOL), under the leadership of its President, Engr. David D. Wounuah, extends profound appreciation to the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) for the bold and transformative steps taken to improve the welfare, recognition, and professional standing of engineers and other employees within the Ministry.

ESOL recognizes the Ministry's salary standardization and enhancement initiative as a significant milestone in strengthening professionalism, motivation, and fairness within Liberia's public sector workforce.

The reform demonstrates a clear commitment to investing in human capital and creating a more productive and efficient institution.
Of particular significance is the Ministry's decision to recognize professional qualifications and responsibilities through substantial salary adjustments. Under the reform:

Directors' salaries have increased from as low as US$503.25 gross to US$1,500.00 gross.

Assistant Directors' salaries have increased from as low as US$237.90 gross to US$1,100.00 gross.

Bachelor's Degree (BSc) Engineers' salaries have increased from as low as US$366.00 gross to US$800.00 gross.

Master's Degree (MSc) Engineers' salaries have been adjusted to US$1,100.00 gross, ensuring greater recognition of advanced qualifications and expertise.

Employees earning below the minimum threshold have seen their salaries increase from as low as US$182.00 gross to a minimum of US$250.00 gross.

ESOL particularly applauds the Ministry for addressing a longstanding concern within the engineering profession, where engineers of varying academic qualifications previously received the same compensation regardless of their credentials. By establishing differentiated salary scales for BSc and MSc Engineers, the Ministry has taken a commendable step toward promoting merit, professionalism, and career advancement within the engineering sector.

The Society notes that these reforms will have a direct and positive impact on employees and their families by improving livelihoods, increasing access to education and healthcare, boosting morale, strengthening staff retention, and enhancing overall productivity.

As Liberia continues its drive toward infrastructure development and economic transformation, ESOL believes that investing in engineers and technical professionals is critical to achieving sustainable national progress.

The Ministry of Public Works has demonstrated leadership by recognizing the value of its workforce and aligning compensation with qualifications and responsibilities.

The Engineering Society of Liberia therefore encourages other engineering-related institutions, government agencies, state-owned enterprises, and private-sector organizations to emulate this example by implementing policies that improve the welfare, professional recognition, and compensation of engineers and technical personnel across the country.

Engineering Society of Liberia Commends Ministry of Public Works for Bold Reform Initiative Benefiting Engineers

The Office of the President of the Engineering Society of Liberia (ESOL), under the leadership of President Engr. David D. Wounuah, extends heartfelt appreciation and commendation to the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) for the recent administrative reforms and strategic restructuring involving Resident Engineers across Liberia’s fifteen counties.

The Society views this initiative as a progressive and timely intervention aimed at strengthening efficiency, accountability, productivity, and professionalism within the engineering sector of Liberia. The Ministry’s decision to improve the working conditions of Resident Engineers through increased remuneration, provision of brand-new vehicles, operational support, and the deployment of Assistant Resident Engineers demonstrates a genuine commitment toward empowering engineers to effectively execute their national responsibilities.

ESOL particularly applauds the leadership of the Minister of Public Works, Hon. Roland Layfette Giddings, Engr. Prince D. Tambah Sr. along with the Ministry’s Management Team, for introducing policies that prioritize competence, performance evaluation, strategic deployment, and institutional capacity building. Such reforms not only motivate engineers but also create an enabling environment for infrastructure development and national growth.

The Engineering Society of Liberia further recognizes the Ministry’s vision to expand the scope of operations of Resident Engineers through alley openings, infrastructure surveillance, enforcement of construction permitting, and the establishment of county-based internship opportunities for aspiring engineering students. The Liberia Women in Engineering (WINE), an auxiliary of the Engineering Society of Liberia, has officially inducted its new leadership team for the 2026–2028 term, led by President Engineer Tarlee Gonwokay. This historic induction marks a critical transition for the organization, shifting from the mere recognition of women in technical fields to a tangible, action oriented movement. The new administration aims to dismantle gender stereotypes, increase female participation in STEM, and drive inclusive national development by redefining engineering as a vital tool for social impact and community problem solving.

In her inaugural address to government officials, engineering professionals, and international partners, Eng. Gonwokay highlighted the persistent barriers, such as financial constraints, limited resources, and a lack of visible female role models that hinder women and girls from pursuing engineering careers. She emphasized that engineering is fundamentally about solving real world problems, noting that when women are fully included, solutions to critical challenges like water, energy, and sanitation become stronger and more impactful.

To operationalize this vision and create intentional pathways for women in the profession, the new administration unveiled three strategic pillars: strengthening WINE’s professional network through mentorship and international collaboration; investing in the next generation via nationwide school outreach, hands on exposure, and internships; and enhancing stakeholder engagement by partnering with government and private sectors to advocate for inclusive policies.

Closing her address, Eng. Gonwokay delivered a powerful message directly to young girls across Liberia, urging them to break free from societal limitations, conquer fear, and recognize that their intelligence and ideas are desperately needed to build Liberia's future.
