There are millions of hectares of dense lodgepole pine stands that are ready to be thinned in BC. These stands can be thinned to bring between 60 and 120 cubic meters of wood per thinning that is around 65% green sawlog. From an economic standpoint this is a massive success. Immediately at age 35 2 loads of logs go to the mill creating jobs to feed hungry mills while reducing crown fire hazard and increasing biodiversity immediately. The remaining trees get bigger making more 2 by 10s and less chips by the next thinning, and even better at the following thinnings. An economic model that looks at the size of the tree immediately senses what we know in our hearts, that bigger trees are worth more than a whole bunch of small trees. At age 65 on the 3rd thinning the stand has very large high quality trees, and way more biodiversity. At around 80 years a regeneration cut is made that leaves the stand with 50 mature trees, enough light to bring back birch and aspen to the stand, and the young spruce and other understorey trees are able to instantly create a multi aged forests that still has enough light to bring more deciduous in.
The answer to dense pine is forestry. Forestry done right.
