Advancing Inclusive Innovation in Malawi

UniPod Malawi, in collaboration with the Directorate of Inclusive Education and Nutrition Services, recently conducted a field visit to the Resource Centre for the Blind at Blantyre Secondary School, where the first redesigned Handframe prototype developed by UniPod Malawi was tested.

The visit was accompanied by a lecturer from Montfort College, a specialist in inclusive education and resource support, and the team was warmly welcomed and supported by the dedicated resource teachers at Blantyre Secondary School.

The main objective of the visit was to test the functionality of the handframe prototype and collect first-hand user feedback from learners and educators. The feedback gathered will help guide further improvements to ensure the tool is practical, effective, and accessible to those who need it most.

This initiative represents an important step towards the local development and mass production of assistive learning tools in Malawi, reducing reliance on imported equipment while promoting sustainable, locally driven innovation for inclusive education.

A proud moment for innovation, inclusion, and Malawi
We are excited to celebrate Chimwemwe Liwonde, a Unipod innovator whose groundbreaking work has just been recognized at a national level!

He emerged as the winner under Best Social Impact Solution Category at the 2026 MACRA National ICT Innovation Awards, that took place at BICC, in
Lilongwe.

Chimwemwe, a First-Class BSc Computing graduate, developed an AI-Powered Desktop Eye-Control System, a homegrown assistive technology that allows individuals with severe motor disabilities, such as cerebral palsy or quadriplegia, to fully operate a computer using only their eyes.

Using advanced Computer Vision and AI through a standard laptop we**am, this solution removes the need for expensive imported hardware and works completely offline, making it a true β€œZero-Kwacha” hardware solution tailored for inclusive schools and rehabilitation centers across Malawi.

During the awards, Chimwemwe had the opportunity to pitch this innovation to high-level stakeholders, including government ministers, the Japanese Ambassador, the MACRA Director General, and leading corporate executives showcasing the power of locally-driven solutions to real-world challenges.
This achievement is also a testament to the impact of UniPod.

From incubation to mentorship under Mr. Francis Masi, UniPod provided the environment that transformed this idea from a university prototype into a nationally recognized, award-winning innovation.

Next step!!
The vision is clear: national deployment. Chimwemwe aims to work with organizations like Organisations and the Ministry of Education to bring this solution to students who need it most, ensuring technology becomes a bridge, not a barrier.

This is more than an award, it’s a step toward an inclusive digital future aligned with Malawi’s development agenda.
