Ever wondered what a hungry supermassive black hole looks like up close?

Astronomers just combined the power of NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the James Webb Space Telescope to create a stunning new view of the heart of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365, located 60 million light-years away.In this image, the brilliant glow at the center is a black hole weighing about 2 million times the mass of our Sun.

It’s actively devouring gas and dust, heating material to millions of degrees near its event horizon (shown in X-rays) while surrounded by swirling dusty structures that feed it (highlighted in infrared).This cosmic monster is one of the best-studied feeding black holes in the nearby universe, giving scientists a front-row seat to how these giants grow and shape their galaxies.

Iapetus has a massive ridge running along its equator that rises up to 12 miles high and stretches for over 800 miles. Scientists aren’t entirely sure how it formed—some think it’s a leftover from when the moon spun much faster, while others suggest it could be debris from a collapsed ring. Either way, it’s one of the strangest structures in the Solar System.
