Research has found that some people have an epigenetic age that is younger or older than expected for their chronological age. Faster epigenetic aging has been associated with poorer health outcomes and a higher risk of age-related decline.

Studies involving thousands of participants have shown that advanced epigenetic clocks can provide information associated with healthspan, physical functioning, cardiovascular disease, cancer and mortality risk beyond chronological age alone.

AGTC Genomics was honoured to participate in the One-Day International Symposium on โ€œBiomarkers in Early Disease Detection and Vaccine Development: A Transformative Journey in Modern Medicine,โ€ organised by the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.

During the industry briefing, Professor Dr Chee Onn Leong, Founder and CEO of AGTC Genomics, shared our recent success in developing and commercialising Malaysiaโ€™s first locally developed Multi-Cancer Early Detection test, alongside advances in clinical shotgun metagenomics through collaboration with Universiti Malaya and Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

Early detection can fundamentally change the course of disease. Identifying cancer before symptoms appear may create opportunities for earlier intervention, less complex treatment and better patient outcomes. Similarly, clinical shotgun metagenomics can support the broad detection of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms, particularly in complex cases where conventional diagnostic methods may not identify the cause of infection.

The symposium also reinforced an important message: scientific discovery creates its greatest impact when academia, healthcare institutions and industry work together. Academic expertise drives discovery, clinicians ensure relevance to real patient needs, and industry provides the development, validation, quality and commercialisation capabilities required to bring innovation into clinical practice. This shared mission was central to the symposiumโ€™s focus on accelerating biomarker discovery, validation and clinical adoption.

Thank you to the National Institutes of Health Malaysia (NIH) and the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) for the invitation to the recent Translational Research Stakeholder Engagement Workshop.

The session brought together leaders from research, healthcare, investment and commercialisation to discuss how Malaysian discoveries can progress from the laboratory into real-world healthcare solutions.

Why do many Malaysian technology companies struggle to scale internationally despite having strong talent, science and innovation?

The visiting teams were particularly impressed by the development and commercialisation of AGTC Genomicsโ€™ Malaysian-designed and clinically validated Multi-Cancer Early Detection test.

Using advanced liquid biopsy and ultra-deep sequencing technology, the test is designed to detect molecular signals associated with more than 21 types of cancer through a blood sample.

This achievement demonstrates that Malaysia has the scientific talent, technological capability and commercial potential to develop advanced healthcare solutions that can compete beyond the domestic market.

However, developing technology is only the beginning. Malaysian start-ups also require greater access to growth capital, international partnerships, regulatory support, market access and opportunities to validate their technologies globally.
