National Geopolymer Concrete Competition 2015

National Geopolymer Concrete Competition 2015 National Geopolymer Concrete Competition to promote sustainable and environmental friendly cement free construction through geopolymer concrete technology

After the success of Intervarsity High Geopolymer Concrete Competition (IHGCC) on 2014 in UTP, UCITY together with the faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering will be organizing The 2nd National Geopolymer Concrete Competition (2nd NGCC). This competition is to promote sustainable and environmental friendly cement free construction through geopolymer concrete technology. Known as the future

concrete, geopolymer concrete is made from utilization of waste materials such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) to minimize the demand of Portland cement, which is responsible for high CO2 emission. It is reported that production of Portland cement alone contributes to 7% of global carbon emission. This event is supported by Malaysian Geopolymer Association (MyGeopolymer). This event will bring awareness to students and researchers to explore further this eco-friendly concrete technology and act as a platform for learning. 2nd NGCC is expected to encourage students and researchers to put on their creativity and technical skills to produce competitive and innovative geopolymer concrete design with high early strength.

What is Geopolymer Cement?

Geopolymer cement is an innovative material and a real alternative to conventional Portland cement for use in transportation infrastructure, construction and offshore applications. It relies on minimally processed natural materials or industrial byproducts to significantly reduce its carbon footprint, while also being very resistant to many of the durability issues that can plague conventional concretes.

Creating geopolymer cement requires an alumina silicate material, a user-friendly alkaline reagen (sodium or potassium soluble silicates with a molar ratio MR SiO2:M2O>1,65, M being Na or K) and water. Room temperature hardening relies on the addition of calcium cations, essentially iron blast furnace slag.

Geopolymer cements cure more rapidly than Portland-based cements. They gain most of their strength within 24 hours. However, they set slowly enough that they can be mixed at a batch plant and delivered in a concrete mixer. Geopolymer cement also has the ability to form a strong chemical bond with all kind of rock-based aggregates
