Phenolic insulation materials consist of solids mixed with phenolic resin and a a surface acting agent. The resulting reaction produces a network of bubbles, which is then cured into a foam. Predominantly closed cell structure with millions of microscopic, unconnected bubbles. These bubbles effectively contain the blowing agent, which is responsible for forming the foam and keeping it rigid on a long term basis.

Typically, vapour barrier jackets are glued to the phenolic insulation section sand shipped to the jobsite, where the insulation is then installed by the contractor.

The advantages of phenolic insulation,

1) Outstanding insulating properties due to its very low thermal conductivity.
2) Superior fire resistance with very low flame spread and very low levels of toxic gas emission. Normally rated with an ASTM E84 25/50 Class A flame and smoke rating.
3) Although non-biodegradable, the waste insulation can be easily reused and manufactured into a new product.
4) Structural strength.
5) High water resistance
6) Chemical resistance due to its inert and stable nature.
7) High working range temperature.
8) CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) and HCFC (Hydrochlorofluorocarbon) free which these substances are the global warming gases.

The disadvantages of phenolic insulation,

1) The major drawback of phenolic is it shrinks up to 2% after curing, which may cause air leakage and heat transfer.
2) Significant amount of petroleum and natural gas must be burnt during the manufacturing and refining processes.
3) Phenolic foam insulation will deteriorate if it is exposed to moisture or sunlight for extended periods of time.

Polyisocyanurate foam insulation, more commonly referred to as PIR or Polyiso, is a kind of thermalplastic essentially produced as a foam and put to use as rigid thermal insulation. The starting material is the same as those of Polyurethane, except the proportion of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) is higher and a polyester-derived polyol is used in the reaction instead of polyether polyol. It is manufactured from liquid polyisocyanurate foam sandwiched between fiberglass reinforced organic felt, fiberglass mat (inorganic), or foil facers. It is closed cell foam sheet and it contains low conductivity gases in their cells. The reason to its high R-value is due to its high thermal resistance in its cells.

The advantages of polyisocyanurate insulation are,

1) Reduces air infiltration and exfiltration and thus reduces heat loss.
2) It has highest R-value per inch of any insulation products
3) Absorbs less than 1% of water, far less than any rigid insulation.
4) Relatively strong at 20 Psi.
5) Holds up well and can be re-used.
6) Lightweight and easy to install.
7) Stronger molecular structure resulting in more thermally and chemically stable than PUR.
8) Higher fire resistance than PUR.

The disadvantages of polyisocyanurate insulation,

1) PIR insulation can be a mechanical irritant to skin, eyes, and upper respiratory system during fabrication.
2) in a range of flaming, non-flaming, and poorly ventilated fires, and concluded that PIR generally released a considerably higher level of toxic products than the other insulating materials studied (PIR > PUR > EPS > PHF; glass and stone wools also studied.

Polyurethane foam insulation is a modern and highly effective method of thermal insulation. It was developed in Germany during WWII and its principal applications are in coatings, elastomers and foams. Rigid polyurethane foams have become widely used as insulation materials because of their combination of low heat transfer and good cost effectiveness. Its cellular structure is formed through high pressured blowing agents, generating thousands of tiny bubbles throughout the material's liquid mixture.

The advantages of polyurethane insulation,

1) Highly efficient insulation material due to its low thermal conductivitiy.
2) Excellent anti-corrosive closed-cell structure makes it superior air and moisture resistant material.
3) Weather resistant and easy to install with sandwiched panels pre-fabricated in factory.
4) Very light yet with higher load.
5) Low water absorption coefficient making it a reliable waterproofing material

The disadvantages of polyurethane insulation,

1) As the insulation ages, the R-Value drops because the gas escapes from the cells.
2) Very weak to ultraviolet radiation which the exposure to it will lead to rapid wear.
3) Produces toxic gas when burnt.

Polystyrene foam board, also known as EPS board, is one of the common interior wall insulation materials, mainly used for building walls, roof insulation, insulation and other composite panels. EPS is divided into expansion board (Benzene Board) and Continuous Extrusion plate XPS (extruded plate).

The advantages of polystyrene insulation are,

1) Density coefficient, good impact resistance, have the ability to change and respond by the shape of the external impact force buffering.
2) Small area of damage will not affect the entire surface of the wall due to independent bubble structure.
3) Low water absorption, good anti-permeability, effectively avoid the damp moldy walls.
4) Highest degree of recyclable plastics.
5) The production process does not use freon, one of the global warming substances other than CO2 that contributed to the greenhouse effect.
6) Full life cycle energy consumption of plastics is the lowest.
7) Low thermal conductivity due to the air-filled group structure.

The disadvantages of polystyrene insulation are,

1) Long duration construction process.
2) Flammable and emits toxic gas after combustion. Polystyrene board is easy to burn, even adding in flame retardant substance, it can reach B combustibility grade.
3) Prone to crack due to low strength.
4) Limited strength and load-bearing capacity.
5) If it is not cured properly, the quality may not be guaranteed and it may shrink or crack.

Rock-wool insulation, or mineral wool insulation, originated from a volcanic rock that is melted at a temperature around 1600 Degree C. Being spun into a package of wool and bound together by means of resins and oils, which give the material waterproof qualities as well.

The advantages of rock-wool insulation,

1) It is vapour permeable, that means damp can circulate and evaporate and therefore, limits the risk of damp problems.
2) Insulation value remains unchanged as years go by.
3) Other than just for thermal insulation, rockwool is a suitable material for sound and fire insulation. It can withstand more than 1000 degree C without melting
4) It holds 18-25% of air which makes it a breathable product which could slow down or prevent moisture buildup

Disadvantages of rock-wool insulation,

1) Non-biodegradable - its rock. It will be what it is after million of years.
2) Health hazardous due to the reason that it is made of rocks and minerals. Wearing a dusk mask is recommended while handling rockwool.
3) Has a high potential of loss of R-value due to its form that there will always be a gap in the installation.
4) It will sink, compress and sags as it ages, especially when it is installed on a ceiling or vertical wall.

Fiberglass insulation, the most ubiquitous insulation material being used ever since the its introduction in 1938. It is typically being manufactured in two different forms, pre-cut batts and rolls and blown-in loose fill, and it is primarily used for thermal and acoustical purposes in wall cavities, attics and other critical open spaces.

The key advantages of fiberglass are,
1) Lower installed cost
2) Design flexibility
3) Maintaining its R-Value over a long period of time due to its inert character which doesn't settle
4) It doesn't hold and absorb moisture, which means it's R-Value can be restored if it is dried completely in the event that it got wet
5) It is naturally noncombustible and remains so for the product's life
6) Naturally sound-absorbent material

The disadvantages of fiberglass are,
1) Due to its low density, air leakage is prone wherever there is a gap, crack or unsealed surface
2) Moisture can easily contaminate fiberglass and it's R-Value will drop when it is contaminated
3) Mold growth frequently follows when moisture is present in fibeglass. Airborne mold spores that settle in the fibers of fiberglass insulation thrive when exposed to moisture from water vapour in the air or condensation and it can be a source of unhealthy indoor air quality and produce allergic symptoms in susceptible individuals

Some of the thermal insulation materials commonly available in the market for HVAC indsutry,

1) Fiberglass - consists of extremely fine glass fibers, which is one of the most ubiquitous insulation materials. With manufacturers producing higher density, the R value is slightly higher than the standard
2) Mineral wool - rock wool, a man-made material consisting of natural minerals like basalt or diabase
3) Polystyrene - colourless, transparent thermoplastic, commonly used to make foam board or beadboard insulation
4) Polyisocyanurate - a thermosetting type of plastic, closed-cell foam that contains a low conductivity, hydrocholorofluorocarbon-free gas in its cells, which over time the R-Value can drop as some of the low-conductivity gas escapes and air replaces it
5) Polyurethane - a foam insulation material that contains a low-conductivity gas in its cells, available in closed-cell and open-cell formulas
6) Phenolic - uses air as the foaming agent but can shrink up to 2% after curing
7) Polyethylene - a thermoplastic insulation which is commonly used in wet environment due to its moisture resistance
8) Elastomeric - commonly based on a blend of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) and nitrile butadience rubber (NBR) using a chemical blowing agent. It will not contribute significantly to fire and in certain circumstances is self-extinguishing.
