Two-Layer SMD Assembly — Engineering a Compact IoT Bio-Tracker.

One of the most critical stages in developing our IoT Bio-Health Tracker at Embedded TechLab was the PCB assembly process. The design utilizes a two-layer board architecture to balance precision sensing and compact integration. On the first layer, we placed the core sensing components, the infrared sensor for BPM measurement, the accelerometer IC, and the gyroscope, alongside other critical SMD parts. These were assembled using a controlled reflow process to ensure proper thermal profiling, alignment accuracy, and reliable solder joints for signal integrity.

The second layer houses the microcontroller, power management circuitry, and supporting telemetry components, carefully hand-soldered to maintain placement control and structural stability. This layered approach allowed us to constrain the overall board size while preserving functionality, enabling a compact form factor suitable for handheld and wearable applications. The final assembly integrates seamlessly into its custom casing, completing a build focused on size efficiency, reliability, and practical usability.

Current efforts are focused on iterative refinement of signal conditioning, noise reduction, motion-artifact compensation, and power optimization. Future development will explore expanded data logging, enhanced validation studies, and broader integration models to strengthen the system’s applicability in continuous physiological monitoring research.

Proximity Detection Meets Long-Range Communication

Physical obstruction detected. Signal transmitted. Response confirmed.

This system demonstrates a practical implementation of distance sensing paired with LoRa communication. The hardware combines ultrasonic sensors for proximity detection with LoRa modules for reliable, long-range wireless transmission, extending communication well beyond typical WiFi or Bluetooth limits.

The design process involved careful integration of the sensor interface, power management, and radio communication stack. Once assembled, the firmware was programmed to detect physical obstructions and relay that information to a remote receiver in real time.

At Embedded TechLab, we validate these systems under real conditions: checking response times, across distance. This hands-on approach ensures that the hardware and software work together reliably before deployment.

Embedded Systems | Assembly & Review

This is a typical review session here at Embedded TechLab. Designs based on client proposals are assembled, inspected, and powered up while firmware and schematics are reviewed side by side. At this stage, the focus is on validating the design, confirming assumptions, and ensuring it is ready for reliable implementation.

Our embedded systems team works directly on the bench, testing interfaces, validating behaviour, and observing how the system responds under real conditions. Issues are discussed in real time, adjustments are noted, and decisions are made with both firmware and electronics in view.

This hands-on review helps us align early and reduce surprises later. By grounding development in practical testing and shared understanding, we ensure that systems leaving the lab are stable, functional, and ready for integration.

At Embedded TechLab, every product starts with design thinking and structured review. Before anything is built, we align on the problem, constraints, and real-world use case. This process helps us avoid assumptions and ensures that what we design actually fits the job it is meant to do.

Our approach brings together electronics, firmware, embedded systems, and product design into a single workflow. Each department contributes early, reviewing designs across hardware, software, enclosure, and usability. This cross-review helps us catch issues early and refine solutions before deployment.

The result is products that are practical, reliable, and fit for purpose. By focusing on alignment and careful design review, we help our clients move from idea to working solution with fewer iterations and better outcomes.

Rounding Off the Week at the Lab!

Debugging and testing are integral parts of our development process at MEmbedded TechLab.

Each custom PCB we assemble undergoes thorough troubleshooting to ensure functionality, performance, and reliability before deployment.

This session captures part of our in-lab workflow, analyzing circuit behavior, validating sensor responses, and verifying board communication protocols.

Our approach remains the same across every project: precision, documentation, and continuous improvement.

Custom Mobile Phone Update!

At MEmbedded TechLab we’ve made steady progress refining both the architecture and firmware for our custom mobile phone project.

It’s been about getting the hardware stable, simple, compact, optimizing the code, and making everything work together seamlessly.

A few more stages to go, but things are looking solid.

Testing and Validation Phase at MEmbedded TechLab

Our engineering team is currently conducting comprehensive sensor validation and calibration tests for a client-commissioned security device. The project involves precision monitoring of environmental parameters and real-time data acquisition to ensure optimal performance under various operational conditions.

The testing protocol includes extensive baseline characterization of motion sensing and acoustic monitoring systems, alongside threshold optimization and multi-parameter analysis. Our focus is on understanding how these variables interact under different scenarios to establish reliable detection boundaries. Live sensor data visualization enables our team to refine detection algorithms and validate system responsiveness before deployment. Each component undergoes rigorous evaluation to meet the specified performance criteria and ensure accurate differentiation between normal operational states and anomalous events.

This phase is critical to ensuring the final solution delivers reliable and consistent operation in real-world applications. We're committed to thorough testing and validation processes that guarantee our clients receive robust, field-ready systems.

Home Automation System Design – From Concept to PCB

At MEmbedded TechLab, we recently completed the design of a versatile Home Automation System built around the ESP32. The system integrates Wi-Fi connectivity for IoT applications and GPRS communication via the SIM800L, making it suitable for both local and remote monitoring.

The hardware features a 2-layer PCB that combines relays for AC load control, onboard buttons for manual interaction, sensors for environmental monitoring, and AC protection circuitry for safe operation. The objective was to develop a board that could reliably handle essential automation tasks while remaining adaptable for broader applications.

We relied on Proteus for schematic and PCB design, with supporting component libraries and 3D rendering. The design approach strikes a balance between connectivity, usability, and safety, aiming to provide practical solutions in the rapidly growing field of smart home and automation systems.

Next up, the Manufacturing of the board.
