3-Years of Reliable Clean Energy: Belel 100 kWp Solar Mini-Grid
The 100 kWp solar mini-grid serving Belel Community in Maiha Local Government Area, Adamawa State, commissioned in December 2022, has demonstrated consistent and robust performance.
As of December 2025, the system has delivered a cumulative total of 335.9 MWh of solar energy, with 306.8 MWh distributed to end-users via the dedicated network. Notably, the mini-grid maintains an average system availability above 90%, reflecting its operational reliability and effective maintenance practices.
Belel is a community of approximately 10,000 residents and serves as a key location for cross-border trade between Nigeria and the Republic of Cameroon. With its status as an official border crossing, Belel facilitates significant import and export activities as well as immigration flows.
The mini-grid features full automation through smart energy meters and advanced IoT technology, enabling comprehensive monitoring and control of grid operations. Additionally, customer meters receive tokens automatically, eliminating the need for manual intervention.
This initiative represents a successful achievement under the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Renewable Energy Fund (REF) Call 2 Public-Private Partnership (PPP) programme and has made substantial contributions to enhanced energy access and local development.
